Question about LED lights and strobes on the 7D

So, am about to embark into doing a music video which the music is very much techno/electric themed. The dj has his own strobes and LED lights what change colour and strobe.

But what I have learned so far by playing with DJ lights as a silouette for him, is that basically those lights and the 7D don't get along. I was wondering if anyone here had any tips for the best way to shoot Strobe LED's or Colour LED lights, I can't give you their power but they give out a shitload of light, enough to fill a room.

Whats the best way to deal with those?

Anyone have any ideas?

I did some more tests myself, strobes and the 7D just don't get along at all, it feels like a spasm, but the strobes only had a set speed, anyone tried them with slower working strobes?

I would try playing with my shutter speed.
because of the rolling shutter the light can be on for part of the frame and off for another. Now in film that's ok because its the whole frame but here that could be the bottom half of the frame sometimes.

I haven't worked with strobe lights for video yet but i would expect it to be quite a problem.

This is due to the rolling shutter, which is part of the design of all CMOS based cameras, including RED, and iPhones. Basically, it scans the frame from top to bottom, one line at a time. If something happens quickly that only registers for part of the scan (like a flash), it will only show up in that part of the frame.

Sometimes you will get lucky and the flash will synchronize with the frame nicely. Other times you'll only get part of it.

This is just one of those things. There isn't a setting you've missed. Your choices include using a different camera, doing post-production effects work to try and fix the problems (manually turning flashing frames to white), and that sort of thing.

Good luck!
