Question About Importing SDHC Card To HD

When importing the SDHC card contents onto your computer for backup, is there anyway to import it without certain clips included?

I use Final Cut Pro. It needs to convert the SDHC files to ProRes. So I know that when using FCP, I can choose which clips to import.

But I backup the SDHC cards by dragging the folder from the SDHC card onto my hard drive. However, when doing this, I can't pick and choose which clips I want to bring with that folder, and which to leave alone.

My purpose in this, is that I have an SDHC card with footage for multiple projects on it. I would like to import the SDHC card folder onto the hard drive with only the footage from the one project, and then bring in the SDHC card folder again, with only the footage from the other project.

I've tried importing the SDHC card with everything on it, and then, with the media on my hard drive, deleting specific clips from the folder. But that seems to corrupt it, because when I point FCP to that folder with the deleted clips, Final Cut pro gives me a big "Huh?"

My method of organization is that I have a Final Cut Pro folder on the hard drive. Inside that I have the folders for each project title. And inside the project title folder is the SDHC card folder (which my camera, the HMC150 labels "PRIVATE".)

I hope this makes sense, I tried to be as short as possible, but I felt it need a bit of explanation.

Thank you!

Don't think so.

Don't think so.

I don't think you can do what you want. My experience is that the PRIVATE folder needs to stay intact. I don't think you should even change the name.

A solution to your problem: don't wait to fill up the card, but offload it at the end of the day, confirm that all is OK; reformat the card and go on to the next project. Or, if you are switching projects during the day, switch cards as appropriate. If need be, you CAN remove a card that is not full; put it back in the camera later; and continue using it, I believe.

Thank you for the reply.

I figured it might come down to that. I'm going to spend a few extra bucks to have more cards on me at all times as well, so I can pop a new one in for different assignments. I just like filling the card up as much as possible, so I don't have say, 8 "PRIVATE" folders on my hard drive, all containing just a few clips, all for the same project.

But I'll do what I have to do.

Thanks Again,
Daneil

If you don't want all the clips, delete them in camera prior to taking the card out and copying them to the HDD.

My advise is to be conservative in what you are trying to achieve.

SDHC cards can be purchased relatively cheaply. But you cannot reshoot event video.

Once you've lost the footage, it's gone.

FCP needs the full directory structure starting from PRIVATE folder. Unlike most other NLEs, it does not accept individual MTS files. If you have several projects in one folder, you can drag those MTS files that you need into their respective folders and recreate AVCHD directory structure with an AVCHD/BD authoring tool. For example, MultiAVCHD can do it for you, but AFAIK it is Windows-only. On another hand, I have no information whether directory structures created by MultiAVCHD or another authoring tool is accepted by FCP, would be nice to find this out.

Like David suggested, try to keep only one project on a card. Cards are not expensive compared to P2 cards. If you don't shoot a lot then get 4GB cards, they can be backed up to an AVCHD disc very easily.
