Question about audio....

I am in the process of creating a short film and my only concern is the audio quality that the XL2 can provide. Would I be better off using a laptop and a mic and capturing it in a program or just using a mic by plugging it directly into the XL2? I really don't want to ruin the film with bad audio. Any suggestions?
 
Audio quality and features in XL2 are excellent, but if you have someone to assist you then why not, you can consider recording audio separately. It will give you more creative freeedom with the camera. That's how pros do it.

However, recording in the camera is much more reliable than with laptop. As long as you have power in the camera, you have your audio. With laptop things may get out of control. For small production and small crew, I definitely suggest recording everything in the camera. Just test it first to make sure there are no problems with the mics or cables. Consider using a portable mixer controlled and monitored by dedicated audio assistant while in addition to that you could monitor audio in XL2.
 
I just completed shooting a short with the XL2. Sound quality turned out very good. That being said, I was using an SD302 mixer before capturing the audio in the camera. I'd avoid the headaches of using a separate recorder, especially for a short. The XL2 can provide you with commendable sound quality.
 
If you browse or search through the audio section you'll find many opinions. I followed the majority and bought an Oktava mc012. With the DVXuser discount it was $173 from the Sound Room (reputable dealer). This is a very sensitive, warm sounding mic that i use for interiors. For exterior shots, I used a borrowed Audio-Technica AT835. I'll be buying an AT4073 soon, but the loaner got me through my shoot.
