queations for Jan Crittenden

Jan,

Below some question which you should be able to answer without having to reveal detailed specs like pixel counts, variable framerates etc. (although it would be nice to know that as well).

Does the HVX200 have "colorbars / gain-up / autofocus in progressive mode" ?

How is the degree of "Hunting" of the autofocus compared to the DVX100A?

What about the speed of autofocussing in the various modes? In other words does it have a real autofocus in progressive mode like in interlaced mode?

Is the LCD screen of the "reflective" type like the one in the Sony Z1 so it is usefull in sunlight?

Does the EVF have a higher resolution compared to the DVX100A? also B&W possible?

How does the "optical steady shot" compare to the one of the Sony Z1 (I assume you did some comparisons with the competion :-)) )?

Will sounds of autofocus/zoom be picked up by the internal mics as with the DVX?

What are the chances of having dead pixcels on a HD CCD chip? Is there any garanty (read replacement of cam when discovered in the first week)?

Is there an audio lead on the video like with the DVX?

Why does the HVX not have an integrated lens cap in the hood instead of probably a seperate lens cap?

maybe more question will follow. I hope you can answer them already :-)))

Ummm... is that really a critical feature for you? ;)

All joking apart, I would LOVE to see that feature!

Lens caps are such a pain in the arse, especially if running and gunning. This is such a cheap little thing, but worth its weight in gold!

hi jan,

I've heard the HVX converts into a jetpack. This would be extemely useful for scouting locations and quick runs to startbucks. but I want to know if you can still record footage to p2 when it's in jetpack mode.

Jan said yesterday that the LCD is a higher resolution unit compared to the DVX100A.

She said that the EVF will do B&W and color.

She mentioned no noise of the tape drive while recording if you go PS2.

I wish I had asked her the other questions you mentioned.

Oh boy, I can't wait for this camera. I tried to jetpack everywhere with my DVX, and it was such a disappointment!!

hey stein,

you have to go into the menu setting and set jetpack mode to "manual". i usually find setting it at "8" is a good compromise between speed and economy. be sure to use the extra large battery.

The B/W VF means nothing if it's not a CRT. You can't get critical focus on an LCD, B/W or not.

I agree, but a B/W viewfinder can be helpful as it is better suited to help you see contrast. You don't get as distracted by all the pretty colors and you can better judge a setup. If it looks good in black and white, then it will look even better in color.

If I understand correctly, the HVX will offer a pixel-for-pixel focus assist feature. That will go a long ways toward increasing the utility of the EVF as a critical focus aid.

Arrrrg!! I knew it had something to do with that crappy one-hour battery. And to think I sold the cam before gas prices went up.

It's all Barry's fault. He just never discusses these issues and expects us to pick 'em up on our own!!

But that info in in his book! - just read the 2nd letter of each word going down in the index. ..there, see.. clear as day!

What is jetpack mode?

Hi,

>Does the HVX200 have "colorbars / gain-up / autofocus in progressive mode" ?
Yes

>How is the degree of "Hunting" of the autofocus compared to the DVX100A?

Don't know yet. But I don't find that the DVX100A hunts. If your does, it must be the material you are shooting and there is a question that the camera sees as to what should be in focus. That is there are too many things that are near the center and the camera does not know which is the thing you want to have in focus. If this is the case, put it into manual focus and finish the job.

>What about the speed of autofocussing in the various modes? In other words does it have a real autofocus in progressive mode like in interlaced mode?

Since this circuit is not finished on the camera I have, I cannot say.

>Is the LCD screen of the "reflective" type like the one in the Sony Z1 so it is useful in sunlight?

Don't think so.

>Does the EVF have a higher resolution compared to the DVX100A? also B&W possible?

Yes, yes

>How does the "optical steady shot" compare to the one of the Sony Z1 (I assume you did some comparisons with the competion :-)) )?

Actually the Optical Stabilization is not finished on the camera we have. The camera I have does not do much other than 1080/60i

>Will sounds of autofocus/zoom be picked up by the internal mics as with the DVX?

Since the zoom is not finished I cannot answer this question.

>What are the chances of having dead pixcels on a HD CCD chip? Is there any garanty (read replacement of cam when discovered in the first week)?

How many dead pixels did you find on your DVX? Was it replaced or repaired?

>Is there an audio lead on the video like with the DVX?

On P2 I don't believe so and on the firewire out, I do not know. Unfortunately most of these questions obviously need to be answered when we have a final camera.

Why does the HVX not have an integrated lens cap in the hood instead of probably a seperate lens cap?

Seems like a lot of expense when most folks will want to put on filters or a matte box or whatever and remove the lens hood with integrated lens cap. It is a cute feature but sorry I am from an old school on this one. A removable lens cap works why make a simple thing complicated and just another thing to break.

So ask again in November.

Best,

Jan

Thanks Jan for the answers. I hope you will come back on the still open questions in November. By the way you probably have seen de spec of the new Canon cam. So what do you think of them in respect to the HVX?

well duh.. you have to have 2 or you can't control it! -- you have to link the cameras with firewire. ...you use the zoom rockers for thrust and aim by turning the cameras and varying power.
