Quality Hotel Waterfront, Ålesund (Norway)

Hi guys! Long time no see!

I've been working on a video for a quality hotel located in Ålesund, Norway these days.

Very exciting and challenging project seeing as I'm a guy who loves to shoot people and here I'm paid to make rooms and a building look good.
So I went with a mix of it all :P
It's a very fast paced video, the premisses we agreed upon in the contract was to make it about 2 mins long, make it catchy and make people have questions about the hotel after viewing it.
But at the same time make it personal! And of course having a good feeling after watching it. (Good vibe ftw)

As you can see the longest shots (or most of the longest shots) are the ones of the staff. Which Quality Hotel is all about; a good staff!
They make for great "breaks" within all the fast paced shots of the rooms etc.

It's gotten very well responses from the hotel manager and director, so that's a good thing I guess :)
Hope you like it!

The song is made by the artist: State Shirt.
Take a look at his (really great) music here:

To many dutch angle shots, to many low shots then coming to the top & I'm going to be honest you tried to cut it to what appears to be the beat and it's just off. To many straight cuts not hitting the mark and edited way way to fast + the dutch shots make it feel like I was watching your video through a spinning cycle washing machine......

The shots that I thought looked great where the ones of the staff, loved the colors and lighting. Also had a nice soft look to it which truly made the staff personal look beautiful. My advice, relax with the weird angles, slow it down and add some cross dissolves. Instead of just showing the staff by entrance try to show them actually doing their job and interacting with customers as well. Overall quality looks good, but to many weird angles and edited to fast for my liking.

Thanks for the good reply :)

I'll keep that dutch angle in mind for my next project. I have to admit I like a bit of dynamic shots, but I can probably tend to overuse it.

About the editing to the beat, you are correct in the intro, the editing is off beat. But for the rest of the film it's actually quite spot on, but it might be that the youtube compression or the h.264 codec offsets it. Cause I'm viewing it on my computer and it looks perfectly on beat. I've had trouble with that before. It's like it's lagging one or two frames after the actual beat.

I'm a nitpicker when it comes to this thing and I edited it pretty spot on.

I'll look into the compression once more maybe, but I haven't had any other people complaining about that actually. But thank you for telling me!

Take the clip out at :38 for one. The edit was a little too fast on the shots where you were matching the beats. For something like hotels, You want to keep more where they can seen the product (rooms, Bathroom, etc). Use Sliders, Jibs , Tripods. There was also a lot of noticeable shake in a lot of the footages......Don't worry..I do it too. But for something is this nature..which is for a hotel..You don't want shaky footage..Just Fluid footage. Color was Great. The Mingling at the party shots..Some had too much noise to use. I would take some of those out and replace with something else. I agree with Vision_filmz, I also felt like I was in the washer...Too much of it. Anyways, Good Luck and remember..We all learn here.

Well the video you are describing is exactly the video I was trying to avoid.
This is not a presentational video of the hotel and the rooms, the goal was to create a catchy, "feel good vibe" with most of the emphasis on the staff.

The video wasn't supposed to give you a tour of the hotel, they will have to make this kind of video as well. This video was a promotional video made for the hotel to catch the viewer. And for the sales manager to use to "sell" the hotel to potential business clients. We also stated very clearly when making the contract; that the video has to generate questions which the sales manager or the staff can answer.

This is also the reason for it being very short. According to many statistics on youtube, the average viewer will drop out of the film at around 30 seconds if it isn't "catchy". And even "just" a 5 minute video will go unseen at the end.

So I've learned to keep the videos short, and catchy.... Of course one has to consider what kind of video one is making... A long clip can catch the viewer just as much, I'm not saying that. But my client also wanted to show these small glimpses of what the hotel had to offer... So it was a mix of the client wanting more and more clips in the video.. and me having to balance it out and try to make it catchy..

The noisy images are indeed.. too noisy... But the client really wanted to show some of the clips from that particular (low lit) party at the hotel.

A lot of it was really good... so I'm going to point out the things I wasn't crazy about, hope you don't mind.

This looks like a very cool, unique hotel. So why so many shots of generic stuff? Close-ups of glasses? Fruit? Clocks? The motel 8 down the street has clocks, man. Don't show us the same stuff that we already expect from a hotel... or that we can find in our own apartments. Show us what the hotel offers that others DON'T. There's so much more here that's amazing... the view! The cool architecture, the pool, the interiors... the great design of the rooms... lose the clocks and the gaudy "free newspaper" cardboard stand-up. Get more of what makes the hotel really cool.

Anyway, cool video, very catchy.

Is the guy @ 1:15 (employee) also in a previous shot drinking with friends at a table? Or just a lookalike?

Because if so, that strikes me as a lack of casting. (one minute we see the guy tipping back drinks, the next, he's ready to take your bags to your room)

I would agree with many of the editing critiques above, but i do like the colors & shots of this piece.

It's some of the workers on a break, but I can agree that I should've had a different guy sitting there.

Duly noted.
