Q: Picture Profile editor

Has anyone successfully played around with this software to make a nice low contrast, smooh highlight falloff profile? If so would you mind explaining how exactly to do this?

Cheers!

My experience with creating custom profiles is that any latitude gained by reducing the contrast with anything other than the in-camera settings is negated by a sharp increase in artifacts, and that applying the same effects in post yields better results. Of course, if anyone has come up with different results, I'd love to hear about it!

Yes, unfortunately I've found the same thing as well -

For some reason tweaking the curve in the PP editor creates serious noise penalties at all ISOs...

You have to stick with the camera's own curves to avoid noise/artifacts...

Add to this you cannot change white and black points in the PP editor... no real chance of characterizing your own roll off points for high or low lights...

There ARE rumblings of desires to somehow transform LUTs into Pf2s.... and attempt to create in camera looks....
I hope someone finds a way to do this..

Good to know, thank you for looking into this.

No need, I'm not actually looking into it... I'm just hoping to god someone will figure out some sort of method to create custom LUT (look up tables)s to use in the 7D....

I have zero programming/hacker skills...

I think the desire is there on many fronts... I'm sure the more times the camera is used in professional productions, the more requests there will be from DOP's who are used to having LUT control during acquisition...

i would just really love to lower the contrast even more than what the camera is capable of doing.

Try the Nuetral Style and crank the contrast down all the way and drop the Sat. by one of two notches.

With that and sharpness down 1-2 notches is where my 7d pretty much lives.

ya, i tried dropping down the sharpness to 0, but i find that a little too soft even with the most accurate focus, tried 1 sharpness, and still a little soft, i may go to 2 and see what happens.

I have seen several people recommending using neutral and lowering the contrast. But when you choose neutral the contrast is already lowered all the way down by default. So how do you lower it even more? Or I'm missing something here?

lol, it's already low, so yeah, leave it be. I was also confused with this since you could just go into the custom profile ones and lower contrast from there, the result is the same.
