Nice catch, i think you win the award.

Interesting camera.

Points of note. In built 10 bit which is sorely needed. It's Slog3 which is a better curve than Slog2 but whilst the brochure talks about 1.5 stops extra over SLog2/FS700 it also says 14 stops - well Slog2 can hold 13.5 stops. So this is a bit of marketing speak. Yes Slog3 can hold more but i doubt the camera would deliver all that. It looks to be a very similar sensor to the FS700. Same base ISO. No mention of what type of bayer colours - there was a rumour that it had the same as the F55 which would mean a better colour gamut.

It does have RAW and it means 3rd Party options. So i would guess it's similar to he FS700 although it doesn't say whether it's 12bit like the FS700 or more. As i've done to death on my blog, the marketing speak of 14 stops probably translates to real world of 12 stops, especially if it's 12 bit linear RAW. As i said, very similar to the FS700.

So it seems like a really nice balance, good onboard recording options, better ergonomics, RAW choices but there's nothing that would make me switch from FS700+O7Q to it (breaths sigh of relief)

But if you're in the market today what a lovely choice!

cheers

Holy cow. It sounds like it tops out at 180fps... not quite as nice as 240fps. But jeez, if I can do that add-on pack and get genlock, ProRes internal, RAW out, and native V-Mount support... Damn. Honestly, it's looking like if it has 240fps, I'd be sold.

Can't wait to hear more information. If it's as good or better than the FS700, I would be tempted to get it... but at the same time I don't want to invest money to have nearly the same camera I already have (albeit, more internal recording options). I feel like the next time I buy a camera, it should be in a few years and be a "step up" from the FS700 tier.

Yeah same Josh.

But at the same times the Odyssey 7Q is a b to drag around doing documentaries.
Totally agree. Hell, I ran around/hiked an island with the FS700+7Q combo. Not the most elegant. I love the idea of ProRes internally. Man, they are reeling me in with those specs. If it's 10-bit internal, I have to assume 10-bit SDI out. Just bummed about possibly losing 240fps. 180fps is still pretty nice... but I can almost guarantee that it's an arbitrary limitation to avoid cannibalizing the FS700. Hopefully the "Utility SD Card" will let us tweak a .all file and enable some different modes....

Yeah I never expected it to be anything other than an FS700/sensor. So it seems the draw is new ergonomics and internal 4k (which is a pretty big deal) and a few other more pro features. But it seems to come at the cost of size and power consumption. Then again the FS700+7Q together have about the same power consumption as this new camera but this camera does it without extra batteries and cables.

I really hope CD adds low bitrate flavors of Prores to the 7Q, since that is a really big difference here. 4k Prores HQ is overkill for all but theatrical release at 880Mbps (110MBps) and the idea that with the 7Q the only options are 24Mbps or 880Mbps seems pretty inflexible. Don't even get me started about 4k DNG... Frankly I'd consider this new camera just for the fact that it can do <880MBps 4K and can do HD recording without highlight edge artifacting and external recording devices getting in the way.

Where do you see the FS700 is 12bit linear? My understanding is they are all 16bit linear but that is compressed with an slog gamma curve for transport over the 12bit SDI connection. 12bit linear would be way more limiting than what we are seeing from the FS700+7Q.

It it appears the apple prores isn't internal. They are marketing it as native prores, but it requires an external add on to encode to prores 422. Not sure why someone would go for that over the atomos ninja star?

Edit: my bad. The prores IS internal to the qxd cards, but only when you attach the clunky looking thing between the battery and the camera. To be fair it supports a number of functions but I think my point about the ninja star stands, haha :)

Two great things to note compared to FS700:

"The FS7 offers Continuous Recording at Full HD image quality and a frame rate of up to 180fps"
No more buffer of FS700!!!!

"The FS7 is constructed with buttons, dials and other parts specially sealed to prevent dust and water spray from entering. In addition, the cooling fan is equipped with a special duct that prevents dust and water spray from entering electric components and cool air is transmitted to the heat sink to lower accumulated temperatures. In these and other ways, the body of the FS7 is constructed to withstand tough conditions."
This is huuuge, as I personally know 5 different FS700 cameras that had to be rebuilt at Sony (~$3-5000 each) due to water damage from shooting in fog/moist/very light rain areas... About time a 'real world' weather-proofed camera was released!

Sony specs for example and the looking at the actual output - it's clearly 12 bit linear and NOT through a log curve. Same as Bolex and Cion.

look at http://blog.inventome.com/Blog/2014/7/insidecdng/Inside-cDNG-Files for a breakdown

As a C100 owner I hope that Canon either has something up their sleave too or let their marketing team start practicing deep bows while constantly repeating "I`m sorry I failed! I`m sorry I failed! I`m sorry I failed! I`m sorry I failed!"
Seriously, the fs7 so far looks like the first Sony camera I would actually consider buying for my doc-style work. Nice one Sony!

And here we go:

it's a real clever move. Maybe it's hitting the FS700 and F5 a little
but you have the choice to get a 4K C300 and half price 4K Amira
with one camera

did anybody see the button for aperture control of e-mount lenses without manual aperture ring as the SEL1018 or the beloved SEL 18-200?

This is from Juan Martinez' presentation at IBC. The user's arms look way too close to the body for this to be very comfortable. A long lens and mattebox will make it very tiring. Adding some bricks to the back will help, but, I'm not convinced this form factor is right. IMHO, he brick shape of the F5 is much more comfortable for long term shoulder held shots. At least, they got the viewfinder right..PXWFS7preso.059_640_360.jpg

They are also releasing a plate/rod/shoulder thing.
i believe that along with most e-mount lenses, it will work very well out of the box with the way it is. For quick work. I think the thought is that if you're using heavier lenses, you probably have the rods and the extension module and battery in back to even out the weight...

Would be cool if there was a trade-in program for us FS700 owners...
At this price? Might work for RED but on an $8K camera... nah. My FS700 has definitely pulled its weight and been worth the investment. Being able to sell it and get a little out of it to reinvest is a bonus, to me.
