Putting p2 data back on the card...

I used p2 genie to copy the P2 volume to my hard drive. I want to put it back on the card since I erased it. When I try to just drag and drop the footage, it tells me "volume no name is read only". I am on a mac, does anyone know what the right process is to copy the info back to the card?

I don't know what the restriction is; we can do that all day long on the Windows platform. If it doesn't work on the Mac then as David said, there's something in the Mac OS that's preventing it.

Any. EDIUS and Avid support exporting directly back to the cards, and Raylight's P2 Maker supports it for any other NLE.

Yeah, Edius can do this, spanning cards as needed.

It can automatically switch to cards when the current card fills up (for when you output back to the camera), or you can have it prompt you for an empty card (for when you are using a laptop PCMCIA slot).

Yes, if you use "Print To File" or press the shortcut key (default is F11), you should see "HD P2 Clip" listed as one of the Exporters:

Exporters.jpg

If you select "HD P2 Clip", you should see this dialog:

P2Exporter.jpg

If the P2 Exporter sees P2 cards in a PCMCIA slot or a P2 camera, it will let you select them in the dropdown; otherwise, you can export to a hard drive.

You can also manually fill in the metadata for the clip, or load an XML file.

You can record to the P2 cards from your NLE. I've never had a problem doing it with Final Cut. As far as putting the P2 file structure - You'd have to do some major work (on a mac) in Terminal changing the permissions of the P2 Volume to Read/Write and then theoretically you should be able to transfer the files back. I wouldnt recommend changing the permissions on the P2 card. If you do, format it again in the camera before use.

You may be able to do this on a pc

edit - looks like you can as thoff has illustrated!!

Is this a "print to video" process?
It's not "print to video". In Avid 5.7 or EDIUS Broadcast you export a P2 image directly from the editor; it creates the CONTENTS directory and all the subdirectories and it creates the lastclip.txt file.

In Raylight you export an .AVI file, then run the P2 Maker process on that AVI file and it turns the AVI into MXF files and creates all the appropriate subdirectories, etc.

You can also "print to video" from Avid or EDIUS Broadcast if you want, but that's not what I'm talking about here; I'm talking about direct MXF-compatible export from the NLE.

One caveat: there was a recent discussion on the Thomson / Grass Valley forum regarding an inability to print to a P2 card with the HPX2000. Reading from the camera worked, writing did not. This was solved by installing the latest P2 drivers.

The P2 driver installation program provides a list of cameras and other devices that support should be installed for. My guess is that the HVX200 driver was sufficient for read-only access, and when the user added a HPX2000 and was able to see the cards, he assumed that he didn't have to install new drivers and support for the camera.

There are no permissions issues with the PC. You can copy to cards, format cards, erase files from cards, whatever you want.

Thats good to know!

Mac definitely seems behind in universal P2 support which is a bummer because its all I ever use. It hasn't really inhibited me ever, but it might be nice to have a mac P2 viewer or more universal accessibilty (especially with meta data) without having to purchase an additional utility(Like P2 log for example).

I have some footage that will not import for some odd reason in FCP. I am attempting to get the footage back on the card to try the repair function. I downloaded a demo version of P2 log and tried their P2 repair wizard but it did nothing. In the FCP import window, it gives me a preview, but it just won't allow me to import the whole thing. One whole section of footage is basically blank. Any suggestions on solutions?
