Purpose of upgradable firmware on HVX...

Hi,

I was wondering, beside the obvious firmware upgrade to support larger P2 cards, will Panasonic actually use this function/option of having an upgradable firmware to actually add options and improve some things on the HVX200? For example, can an internal image flip for both the LCD and record to P2 be possible just via a firmware upgrade? Or is the firmware option only there for very minor changes?

We don't know what all may be possible. However, if past experience is any indicator of future options, it doesn't look like much will happen. There have been a couple of firmware upgrades but not really any new features added.

One upgrade added a hour usage counter.

Other than that, I've not seen any actual functionality beyond what Barry observes.

To answer the basic question - I was at a P2 workshop in Austin, and the Panny rep said firmware upgrades "could/would" add new functionality besides P2 card upgrades, and so I should upgrade regardless.

As the two previous gentlemen noted - not much appears to have happened.

Hopefully Panasonic makes real and valuable use of it. If they release a successor to the HVX I hope Panasonic also releases a firmware update to the current HVX that would cover many of the reasonable improvements that would be on the new model.

Thanks all for the replies...It sure would be a shame for Pana not to take "real" advantage of this feature.

one thing that they need to do, and I'm sure it can be done via firmware, is make the camera have the ability to do -3db on the gain. an easy fix to help the noise on the cam.

Option to flip the image at the DSP (not just on the LCD)
PN recording for 1080P mode
Noise reduction features like -3db & -6db settings
Invididual gain controls for the R G B Channels
to name a few.....those seems to me like they are software issue more than hardware issue...but I don't really know what is possible with the firmware update. Maybe Jan can shed some light on this...
