Purchasing a 60D

Hey Everyone,

I am going to be purchasing a 60D and just wanted to know your opinion of the best place to get it. Pricewise as well as reliable and maybe if you have had any good experiences with any warranties.

Also I don't know if any of the forums are running promotions through certain vendors or anything.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

If you're in Los Angeles feel free to come stop by us at EVS. I personally am a 7D shooter, and most of the staff shoots as well. We are competitively priced but more importantly knowledgeable. Feel free to give us a call, stop by, or email me if you have any questions.

i would tend to support the 7D over the 60D, simply for the stills framerate (8FPS) and full HD over HDMI out. i use a trio of T2i's as backup/static angle cameras, and prefocus so i really dont need the full HD HDMI out, and i shoot stills with a D300/grip (8FPS) on sets/gigs. If i used HDSLR's as main cameras, you can bet i would have gone with 7D's instead. For trips, my girlfriend brings her 7D for videos and photos. At work we use two XH A1 rigs (sometimes Letus adapters, sometimes not) with Manhattan LCD's for fine focusing via component at 1:1 pixel ratios. It is very hard to fine focus on the T2i's because thy output SD via HDMI while shooting, same with the 60D. Frankly, if i was looking at one for a main camera, i wouldnt even consider the 60D or T2i specifically because of the lack of full HD out during recording.

Completely agree. But some people don't want to drop the additional $500 on a 7D. I'm confident in saying that if I had the chance to do it again, I'd still buy the 7D. That HD out is a life saver when shooting shoulder mount and I'm constantly riding my focus with my Marshall. However though, with the 60D you do get the manual audio control, but again, anything in a professional environment you'd want better audio than what that codec can produce.

First and foremost this is your opinion and not fact. Secondly many & I mean many professionals are using the 5d which output only sd, and still achieving excellent focus. Unless you need 1080 for monitoring get the 60d and save some money as it is an excellent camera.

Hello,

Thank you for your suggestions. Money is not the issue. I have an equal opportunity to both the 7d and 60d.

For me it came to the pros and cons of each.

7D- HD monitoring
60D - swivel LCD and manual audio.

I actually have the T2i and I love it, but my business partner has been borrowing it like crazy and offered to buy it off me, so I figured I would do an upgrade.

I know the audio on the 60D would never be fantastic, but sometimes I end up taking corporate type jobs where a professional audio mixer is not necessary as their sound requirements are rather low. I have seen tests of Lavs run straight into the 60D and i know for some of my reoccurring clients that would be completely fine. In this case, I end up saving at least $250 dollars every shoot which means $250 dollars in my pocket. Yes I could run dual sound with the zoom, but if I am going low budget and not hiring audio, its not something I want to focus on while running camera.

In a much bigger application - television/films, which I also work in- I would have a dedicated sound man so that point would be moot between either the 7D or 60D.

I think for me its honestly coming down to the swivel screen. Not having to hang a heavy monitor off the side of my rig is nice when shouldermount as my back is bad already And my testing says the flip out screen will allow me to see just fine. And as life4eva said, I have to think if people are running 5d's just fine, I will be just fine with the SD output should i need a monitor.

So thank you for your advice everyone, but for me it seems the 60D has won out due to the flip out swivel LCD as I know that will be a nice feature for my rig. Theres always going to be more days to buy cameras I just feel the 60D is what fits best for my current needs.

Feel free to comment if you feel I am really missing something, I am not agitated by discussion nor am I against seeing a flaw in my own argument.

This thread was never about why one should by a 60D but where. I love how it veered so quickly :D

Well I'm enjoying the discussion anyway!

As posted over in another thread I'm also looking at the 60D over the 7D because of the manual audio and the articulated screen....

I'm planning to use the camera whilst travelling and want to be light and mobile....the screen and manual audio options make this a more portable solution.....

so I'm glad to read someone else also thinking the 60D may actually have some advantages for certain uses.
