Punk music video

Hi all,

Here's a video I shot with punk band ASBO Retards:

It was a very run and gun affair, mostly shot hand held on the canon 50mm 1.8

Thanks,

Ross

I really liked this, good interesting shots, for the most part. Varied selection.

What did you use for lighting? (if anything?)

I have been approached to shoot a music vid and im not sure where to start, lol.

HOw did you go about it? Were you playing the song and having the band sing along? How many times did you run through the song and shoot?

At each location did you run through the entire song? (or just portions?)

My only complaint is that sometimes the lead singer just looks like hes mouthing along, rather than singing along. One thing i read is for it to be belivable you really need to instruct the actors/musicians to BELT it out like they would if they were really singing it, or else it just doesnt look real. You had half a dozen instances where this was the case.

Other than that good job.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Yeah we did run through the whole song in each instance, then I just let them lead me around and filmed them during their general punk toomfoolery! It helped that they drunk more as the day went on as they loosened up quite a bit.

I don't think there's ever any hard and fast rule about lip syncing etc. Once you make a few videos with different types of bands you may find out that the best thing possible is to let the performer be happy with what they're doing. These guys are punks who really only wanted to get drunk and mess around, it was my job to capture something representative of their spirit and personality as well as a reflection of how they perform - sometimes what you get wont look 100% technically accurate to the recording, but I don't think this matters.

No offence, but no need to sell us the product.
Drunken punks don´t need a musicvideo, a band does. They went to a studio and showed discipline recording an album (or at least a song), you can demand the same dedication from them, when doing the video.
It´s not the directors job, to make the performer feel comfortable/happy, it´s his job to create a great video. This sometimes means pushing people to their limits and sometimes beyond. Of course, all in a civilized and friendly manner...
I´d cut out all the halfhearted mouthing along, and go for the higher impact shots or shoot additional stuff. Just my 2c of course :cheesy:

Hmmm... in my experience these 2 things don't usually go hand in hand!

I'm not trying to sell you on anything, just giving my opinions on lip syncing

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to watch the video, and gusto filled, belting-out lip syncing or not, I'm really glad you guys liked the look!

Cheers

I really liked it for what the 7D can do... you've inspired me to get a 7D... I really wanted to see how hand held with these cameras work... and if I can do 1/2 as good as you I'll be happy with the 7D...

On the production side of your video... must have been terribly difficult to get anything good with a bunch of boffins hell bent on getting drunk... (but maybe thats their gig)...

Personally I would have put a powerful vignette on all the tomfoolery footage and tried to break up the look so each feel had a different treatment...

Well done...

Cheers

I couldn't agree with this statement more. I sometimes find myself in tense moments with artists when shooting their videos because they always goof around which is ok, it's normal, shooting a video SHOULD be a fun experience BUT it should be a productive one too. When they start to get too distracted that's when I speak up about it. I'll pull them aside and try to re-focus them on our goal, video first, party second. Like I said, sometimes it gets tense but after they see the final edit they always thank me for keeping them focused.

Ok, back on topic... I liked the video. Good job for a run and gun scenario.
