Ok so after lurking around these boards for a few months I've decided to go ahead and purchase the GH1. It seems like an all around contender for my current purposes/budget.

I do however have a quick question about SD cards:

What type of SD cards do I need? as in how fast do they need to be(for video)? I've seen the general consensus is they have to be class 6, but beyond that are there any requirements for the GH1? or DSLR's in general? Also, as a total newb to still photography, can I record video and pictures to the same card? or would this be a bad idea?

The GH1 uses SD cards. Class6. And yes you can shoot stills and video onto the same card. They are in separate folders on the card.

Just remember to format the card in your camera before using it.

Transcend seems to be the most popular brand among GH1 users.
 
I use Panasonic class 4 cards (16 & 12 GB) but designated for HD video. A friend of mine has Sandisc 16GB cards, class 4 with HD video designation, works fine as well. IIRC Transcend card were in the centre of a 'dropped frames' thread in the summer, ie; most if not all people with the problem were using cards from Transcend which seemed to have some compatibility issue with GH1.

If you're doing paid gigs, I'd suggest sticking with Sandisk. I use Sandisk Class 4 "Ultra" cards...3 x 32gb ones...and have put several hours of 1080/24p AVCHD on each one without a problem. The write speed is WAY more than adequate. Transcend 32gb failed on the first use.

I do use smaller capacity Transcend cards in my audio recorders and palmcorder, however....no problems. I just wouldn't trust them again with my GH1.
 
I've had a flawless experience with the Transcend Class 6 SDHC cards, which I now use on all my cameras.
