Pulling the trigger on the HVX

OK. There is a fat slot in the side of this laptop that I could have used for storing about 30 business cards.

But pulling up the device controller on the laptop reveals the following:

PCMCIA adapters:
Texas Instruments PCIxx21/x515 Cardbus Controller
PCMCIA and Flash memory devices:
Texas Instruments PCIxx21 Integrated FlashMedia Controller

From this list is it possible to tell if the P2 card will fit?

It doesn't sound like you will plan to use the FS100 given that you have a Mac, but to answer a question in your original post: the HVX cannot record to both an external device (such as an FS100) and the P2 card; it's either one or the other.

Sure it can. P2 card and Firestore simultaneously is no problem, I've done it. Or DV tape and FireStore (in DV mode) is no problem.

What you can't do is record to the DV tape and the P2 card at the same time, but you can record to the P2 card and any external device simultaneously without a problem. Just make sure you go to the "other functions" and set the device control to "both". If you set it to "off" then it'll only record to the P2 card, if you set it to "ext" then it'll only record to the FS-100, but if you set it to "both" then it'll record to both.

That's interesting. I checked with 2 different people at Panasonic at 2 different times regarding this question (including my manufacturer's rep and a tech in inside support) and they both told me it couldn't (??) . It's a bit frustrating when the dealers are getting bad info *from the manuafacturer* about their own products.

Thanks for setting it straight though. I certainly don't want to dole out any bad info.

I don't know who's giving the bad info, but I can absolutely guarantee that you can record to the FS-100 and to the P2 card at the same time. You can record to any external device and the P2 card simultaneously.

The only limitation is that you can't record to the P2 card and also to the miniDV tape at the same time.

My guess is they assumed that the camera was set to a PN (native) recording mode, which is by far the most popular setting for those using P2 media because of the extended recording durations this allows.

In PN mode, it is in fact impossible to record to a FS-100 or computer because the DV port is disabled.

I've been reading that the native issue was fixed in the latest firmware update to the FS100... More or less, I believe the FS100 itself now drops the frames and writes the data in the 720pN format, not the camera.

I ordered an FS100 a couple of days ago from Calmulet. I'll report back when I've had a chance to confirm this myself.

EDIT... however, I realize what you're saying now is that it won't feed the footage to the FS100 while also feeding the P2... had a dummy moment there. =-)

I'll just throw in a quickie. Even if you're still shooting lots of SD footage on tape, you will be BLOWN AWAY if you shoot in DVCPRO50 on the HVX on P2 or FS-100! The quality difference between the AVX100 and HVX makes you wonder how you put out a professional product with the old camera.

v.3 firmware removes redundant frames on the fly. You set the cam to 24p, not 24 pN, and the FS-100 to one of the p2 PN settings or the QT pN setting.

Only partially though. It removes redundant frames if you set your recording frame rate to 24 or 30. But if you're shooting off-speed (like 32fps or 48fps or something) it won't remove any redundant frames.

Dear Fellows I have to jump in... regarding workflow Firestore FS100 and Mac computers... I am a happy owner of a HVX200, what a wonderful piece of equipment beautiful images, a Mac G5 and A Macbook(laptop) and a firestore and a 8gb card and a lot of more "toys" to make professional videos .

I have not encounter a SINGLE problem downloading from FS-100 to a hard drive using my Mac Book or my G5, not a single one at all , so when I read about people using Mac having trouble I just wonder what am I doing right?
Probably following manufacturer procedures, equip updates via software
clean environment, not adding any software of plug ins unnecessarily, brushing my teeth before going to bed... I don't know but just because someone is having problems with their workflows doesn't mean everybody is having the same.
For me is just a wonderful ride w/firestore-FS100 Mac computers and Panasonic they have never let me down not once...\

enjoy this life../
