Public Enemies...badly shot?

I rented this out , really looked forward to it, and the beginning was promising, then I couldn't help but notice the horrible doco/student film style is was shot in.

Probably the worst Jonny Depp movie I've ever seen, and Christian Bale looked incredibly bored and just did his Patrick Bateman character with a different accent.

Such a shame, I was expecting much more. It turned out to be a total bore fest.

This Netflix sat on my mantle for like two weeks straight. I finally got around to watching like 10 minutes of it and bailed. "Not feelin' it" could not apply more.

Glad I didn't watch the whole thing.

Also had the worst sound mix I've ever heard in a big budget film. I'm not talking about the gunshots, just the fine details of the mix -- the dialogue levels went up and down throughout the film, at times I could actually hear the levels going up and down mid sentence. Even my wife noticed.

We were watching this yesterday and I was wondering why I had to turn the volume up and down on my TV a few times. I thought my kids were messing with the remote.

I thought it was pretty good though.

I didn't note a lot of audio problems with the screener we got.

That said, I find it far from the best Michael Mann film I've seen.

If you google Public Enemies sound mix you'll find a ton of people had issues with the sound mix. Also found this bite on a sound mixers forum, which explains the source of the problem--

Regarding the "muddy" or "unintelligible" dialog: Ed Novick, a two-time AMPAS nominee currently in England on the new Chris Nolan movie (I got to cover Ed for a week in Tokyo), had this to say:

"Michael spent months in the dub stage, only to declare one day (not far from the end) that all the pre-dubs (nicely cleaned-up at that) should be thrown out and that mixing should be done from the original elements. [Expletive deleted]"

No wonder we had to have the subtitles on for most of the DVR'd movie.

I was interested in seeing how noticeable the use of the Sony camera was, and off the satellite, in HD, on a 60" TV it wasn't really. I'd suppose on a theater screen it could have been noticeable.

Agreed.. it looked like they were playin in three total different movies.
I really wished it was so:kali: much more.

The video footage in that stood out like a sore thumb.

I didn't mind the movie though. Must be a ***** being the director of Heat.

I saw it on the big screen, and was ready to ask for a refund, hehe. Naw, I agree though. It was one of the worst lit movies I have ever seen, (in this budget range) . The handheld stuff was all over the place too.

Not that it saves the movie from itself, but I think the best part of it was the Art Direction, particularly the locationeering. They were all over the north and the midwest hitting locations, and I think that to the degree you can see it, it paid off.

i'm watching right now, in HD for the first time...obviously i tuned out, or else i wouldnt be typing this.

is Mann the director that's known for shooting in slower than 1/48 shutter?...seems like every time there's people moving, it's very videoish...static stuff and backgrounds look filmish enough, but i hate the motion blur....looks nothing like film. strange. i do realize that this was shot digital, so don't poke me for not knowing this wasn't film. looks like a shutter speed choice gone wrong.

and ditto for audio...it's late here, so captions are on.
