PSA For Climate Change Contest (?)

True true -- and I'm saying don't even limit it to environment. Broaden it to anything. Anti-drugs, whatever. By REAL group or organization I mostly mean that we politely suggest to entrants not to make parody or fake PSA's.

I like the idea of a general enviro PSA. I think we should take it as part of the challenge to make something informative, but NOT political...that's where your skills can come into play.

Just spread information, not politics.

Also, it would be cool to have some sort of general theme of it all, because if you open it up too much, there won't be a clear defined baseline to judge against.

Example: Create a 30-60 second PSA that deals with enviromental issues, and implements elements of conservation, responsibility, and awareness knowledge.

Just an example, but that would give the judges a criteria instead of objectively picking what they think is the 'best'.

yeah -- environmental is open enough, but still gives the contest, or fest or whatever a theme.

if this one works out then we cand do STD's, Teen Pregnancy, Smoking as other "fests" down the line and those can be the themes, and those are fare less politicized issues (with the excpetion of STD's and Teen Pregnancy on the far far conservative Religous Right end ofcourse - not making a judgement on that viewpoint though).

INFORM..totally on point. I like the idea of doing future PSAs on different topics as well Jack. If we did it all at once right here and now that would be about it. Great idea.

Yep. Just like there was a Zombie Fest, a Sci Fest, and Hero Fest this year.

You could have DVXuser Environment PSA spec-fest, DVXuser Eductaion PSA spec-fest, DVXuser Hunger spec-fest, etc.

I don't like the idea so much of having criterion such as hitting all three issues of conservation, responsibility, and awareness of knowledge.

Because
A) While I think you could do a nifty overview PSA that hits all of those, you might get more impact from tackling one of them. (my idea goes after the jugular of responsibiilty for example).
B) What if someone comes up with a stellar angle on the issue that informs or promotes change that doesn't fit those criteria?

Example (which would fall into Responsibility alone) ... the existning AIDS psa where white waspy american types say they are not concerned with the aids epedemic because its not close to them and they don't know anyone that has aids ... then they show them visiting schools in developing countries where children have been orphaned due to teh aids epedemic or are suffering from it themselves ... you see the faces of the 50 something white people change and tears well in their eyes and then shots of them devastated as the rickety bus takes them back to their hotel or plane.

So that add doesn't have an ounce of information about how the disease is spread or what can be done to help -- its 100% wake up call, and is very effective I think.

So just as I would keep the topic broad (envoronment vs. global warming) but within a certain ruberik, I would base the judging on
CONTENT "Does it inform OR advocate change OR awareness"
EXECUTION "Were the design, technical and acting choices well executed?"
OVERALL IMPACT "Did the execution gell with the contet to create a sharp impactful add that was clear and will stay with you"

Much better criteria, I was just throwing out those particular topics (responsibility, etc) as just ideas, not anything to go by, because I know I wouldn't want to be limited, but definately need something to judge against.

What about tech-wise, I'm assuming it will need to include some sort of DVX shot footage, correct?

Well - I think that's a call for Jarred, but I would be tempted, if Jarred would allow it, to open the gates on this one. So the MOd run Genre Fests remain limited to HVX / DVX but the user run Spec Fests are open, in the spirit of getting the best ideas out there regardless of what they are shot on.

DVXuser could still be attached to the add -- small print that says "created for DVXuser Environment fest" and help DVXuser visibility and PR that way.

I think it would be cool to see some XL2 footage next to DVX ...

But Jarred may feel that if its in this particular back yard it needs to stay DVX or HVX, and of course he has every right to say so and very good reason.

What do you guys think? Open it up if Jarred is down? Or keep it part of the secret []VX brotherhood?

As for other technical, maybe you actinng, cinematigraphy, sound, could be averegared together to get the overall "ececution score" which would be a 1/3rd of the overall score.

YOu could award
"Best PSA" (with two runner ups)
"Best content" (needs a better name - best script?) (maybe with runnerups)
"Technical Excellence" (i.e. best execution) (maybe with runnerups)

So you are really spreading the love around and when people try to sell or donate their PSA's more of them can say something like "receoient of the Excellence in Technical Achievement" award.

We need to get Isaac Brody on this thread though ... it's right up his alley. PK would have good thoughts too.

I'd like to see this one opened right up. Don't forget about the sony cameras too!:)

Once we get a bit more feedback on this, I'll compile what we've got and send it over to him.

What if things like "best content" and "technical" became part of the judging criteria and we just awarded a first second and third prize?

I'll pm Isaac and get him down here. Can you contact PK?

I would like it to be open, especially if it's going to be user run. I like to include elements that aren't always video, so having the freedom to move and use more graphics techniques will allow the creative juices to flow for me.

Okay so here is a rough of what we've got so far so everybody can look at one thing:

DVXUSER PSA CONTEST:
"ENVIORNMENTAL ISSUES

-30 second PSA spot
-open to all camera types
-NO POLITICAL DISCUSSIONS OF THE FILMS CREATED WHATSOEVER
ONLY FILMMAKING ISSUES TO BE DISCUSSED.

JUDGING THE CONTENT:

-was it informative?
-did it bring a feeling of awareness and does it advocate change?
-did the style and the content work well together to create a strong impact on the viewer?

Awards:

BEST PSA
RUNNER UP
THIRD PLACE

Recognition Awards for:
Editing
Screenplay
Lighting
Camera
Sound
Graphic Design

Awesome.

We need more interest in this guys so let everybody know about this thread and get them to sign on here so we can get this thing up and running!:)

Did you PM Isaac Brody ? I didn't PM PK ... will PM them both now if you didn't PM Isaac ... lemme know.

I guess we could do banners with a link to this page (not the first page) of this thread.

If Jack wants to run this little contest ill support it.. something tells me its just looking for trouble though.

Not being an official DVXfest contest it can be whatever cameras want to partake.

If you guys organize this well enough i will give you your own catagory in the Film Festival forum.

I'll run it with you Chad ... meaning ... I'll be responsible for it, which is what I think Jarred wants ... someone he knows he can punch in the head if things go wrong (and someone that knows how to make linking banners, etc.)

But it's your baby and your fire ... so you need to be the driving force and do the lionshare of the work.

2 big things to tackle
1) we should makes sure its OK with Jarred for us to co-host it.
2) maybe we should take a poll and really see who would be down ... it would suck to do a lot of work and only have two entries ... or maybe not ... the official DVXuser fests started that way ... but I would like at least 10 or 12 this first time out.

Other
- I think we should get our ducks in a row and then post a new thread that jarred can make a sticky in the Fests section as he mentioned and then have linking banners and such ...

Ducks to be put in a row include ...
- some graphics and things
- clear presentation of the rules and timeline
- voting system (do you know how to make one of those fancy spreadsheets? My GF might)
- hosting the flicks
- what happens if you win

Also I haven't PMed PK but it seems like this would be a good partnership between DVXuser and Isara ... especially if it can drive hits there as well ... not sure how that would work though.

winner gets a signed picture of JDS.

but seriously, this sounds like a cool idea. i would second the CLEAR definition of rules and regulations, because it could get out of hand real fast, and would you run the votes just like the other fests? I think if you were to offer the contest up to other cameras, you might want to lower the post count to be able to vote. (like 50?) beats me.

I would find other ways to promote it as well, besides for DVXuser, because of its content range, perhaps a myspace bulletin or maybe advertising through Isara. On the front page: Help save the world, and win some shwag at the same time, make a PSA on dvxuser!

Is it really necessary to have all the subcategory winners as well? Just a thought.

Sounds good Jack. I can't really take too many blows to the head anymore anyways. And damn it I understand how to post banners now!:)

Let me digest this for the next day or so and see how much of it I can get together.

Hybridtheory so far I have some diet pepsi and gum to donate for shwag. Let me work on that. I'm not sure we need all the sub-categories either..just throwing it all out there.

Thanks guys. Jack I'll fire you off a pm in about a day when I get some of this worked out.
