***UPDATE****

THE PSA CONTEST IDEA HAS BECAME A GENERAL "ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES" PSA WITH THE HOPES OF HAVING OTHER SUBJECTS IN THE FUTURE. PLEASE READ THE THREAD FOR MORE DETAILS.

A few days ago there was a thread on climate change. Unfortunatly, I think it got a little too heated politically and had to be taken down.

It got me to thinking that perhaps with all the passion here on dvxuser in regards to this topic, maybe people would be interested in having a contest for a Climate Change PSA. I've spoken to Jarred about this and he suggested I put the feelers out on this idea and see what you guys think.

Without getting into the political issues here, could you guys leave your thoughts on this idea of having a contest for a PSA? Who knows..with all the talent we have here at dvxuser, maybe somebodys work would be good enough to be televised. Just an idea. Thanks guys.

I think it's a great idea, but we need to focus on the realities of the situation and not the politics of it. If we really care about climate change then we shouldn't get mired down in politics, and just create some great pieces that can be used to spread information, which, as filmmakers/artists, is our primary charge.

With that being said, two thumbs for this one, opens a brand new avenue for creative expression, IMO.

i think it is a great idea.. but im not sure how you get around the political issues and i can't imagine it not becoming political. you would have to open it to both opinions and that would spell trouble. i think the issue needs to be debated in public even more but is this the right place to do it?

What exactly are the facts?
The world is heating up? Ok.
Pollution is bad? Ok.
Governments need to start fixing it? Duh.
But this issue is so politicized and polarized, it's hard to tell what is fact and what is opinion. Everyone's experts have information to support whoever is paying them.
Otherwise, I think it's a great idea. I think mine will focuse on the general sorry state of the planet. You know rainforest depletion and all.
I can't imagine what it's like to watch thousands of acres of rainforest getting obliterated every day.:furious3:

D,
It was meant to touch on some of the ideas and where it could go. Sort of an example?

I think it's a great idea, too. But where do you draw the boundaries? And what are the basics that we would agree upon? And what if some filmmakers don't agree on all of the basics? It's a giant gray area.

I know. I'm just saying, even if everyone agreed on the problem, suggesting solutions is an even thornier patch.

I'm with David on this one. I can see this getting nasty in no time, because you eventually have to get around who's to blame for it (and that's where the ugliness comes into play).

Like I had stated, I wish for this not to get political. The point of the thread was not really to state your opinions on climate change, but on having a contest for a PSA on climate change. It's a very simple question. Yes it's a good idea and we should give it a shot. Or No. I don't like the idea of that. Please keep it at that so this thread is not deleted. Thanks. Here is a chance to maybe do something with your own hands and perhaps make a difference. I believe that exposure to any subject through visual media can make a great impact. Let's give it a shot.

If the intent is to make a difference or have an impact, it makes it even more certain for there be a big political dust-up.

angrius - again i think it is a great idea and really good of you to try to get it off the ground.. but how do you think we could keep it from turning political?

ONCE AGAIN JUST TO MAKE IT CLEAR:

1) IS A FUTURE CONTEST FOR THE TOPIC OF CLIMATE CHANGE SOMETHING YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED IN?
2) WHAT SORT OF GUIDELINES WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE PUT IN PLACE FOR IT? (I.E. TIME AND STYLE)

Is this clear to everyone now? Can we continue on about the idea of the contest and not personal views on climate change? Let's just see if we can get enough interest in having a contest and then go from there. Thanks:)

To answer your questions first:
1) I am interested.
2) I think a 30 second spot is the way to go because:
-a) it's managable and you are likely to get more turnout
-b) there's a chance a spec PSA that's 30 seconds long could get aired and used somewhere, even if its just as a flash intro to an advocacy group's homepage
3) plaster everywhere "no political discussion of the film, only discuss filmmaking issues and the clarity of the argument as presented NOT the argument itself"

Now to the "is this contest headed down a road to disaster" issue
I think as long as the contest has ground rules for NO political discussion, then MAYBE you'll be OK.

Just like you can have bare boobies in a film you make here, but not post themm in a thread, seems like you could even have a political points to one of these films as long as it was plastered EVERYWHERE not to engage in discussing the politics of the film, only its clarity and effectiveness.

But this is an ideal that may not be obtainable because I don't trust everyone here to be able to say "the argument seemed a little muddled but I thought you executed it well", because the minute you get into the clarity of the argument or presentation of the idea, then its easy to cross over into debating the idea.

I think you are suggesting however that no solutions (which would imply political perspective because the inlove governments) be suggetsed. Rather you are advocatinhg just showing the effects of global warming ... again it MIGHT work ... a this is your brain on drugs type thing, but instead - this is your planet on global warming.

but again ... as someone pointed out ... even some of the facts are in dispute, and the debate over those facts seems to be drawn along political lines.

Good luck.

If you get it off the ground I already have an idea and would likely participate.

- Jack

Well, I would say hold a 30 or 60 second PSA contest but let each entrant choose the topic. Have rules such as:

Each PSA must be for a REAL issue and hopefully geared toward a REAL group or organization. That way we could actually send our PSA's to the groups in case they'd like to run them.

This does have the potential to give a bit of life to what we create. You can only do so much with 5-minute zombie flick, ya know? But the PSA's still let you exercise your production skills while possibly doing some good for a cause you care about.

So my main suggestion would be to not restrict it just to one area such as climate change. Let some of us save the whales!

Thank you Jack and Owen. Great ideas.

Having a general Enviornment PSA may be a good idea . It would add some variety to the contest.

NEXT!

I'nm with Owen on the open topic.

But would repespectfully disagree with the distinguished gentleman from Atlanta that they should be targeted to specific groups a a requirement or rule.

I think the topic is enough to tartget it to specific groups. So if you do "Save the Whales" for example, then you could still shop it around to a multutude of groups who are concerned with that issue and slap their respective logos on it if need be. But I think that could be left up to each filmmaker.

I would just make my point and then see who likes the way I said it and wants to use it (if anyone).

But I can see that some filmmakers might want to narrow their focus to a specific group.
