PS mode (1080p60) first impressions

tis a shame they're charging for this, would have been a nice little boost for AF101 users & keep it competitive with sonys offering
I'm sure we'd all rather it be free, but even after paying for it the current cost of an AF100 plus the firmware upgrade is still $1,250 less than Sony's offering.

No idea, I don't use FCP, but if it did I would think something was broken... I mean, if you drag 720/60p footage onto a 720/24p timeline, does it turn it into slow motion? It shouldn't, automatically...

If you take 1080/60p PS-mode footage and put it on a 24p timeline and play it at 40% speed (thus turning it into 2.5:1 slow-mo) then it would look (motion-wise) exactly like the VFR 60fps footage.

But that's not what this new mode is for. Again, we've already got slow-mo. The new mode is to give you a better-quality "live" image. It's 1080/60i without the "i". It's 720/60p but 1080 instead of 720.

About FCP X -- "auto-conform" wasn't exactly accurate. But compared to what you used to need to do using Cinema Tools to conform footage it's pretty much automatic. You just drop your 60p footage into a 24p timeline and tell FCP X to conform it with just one click. So you do have control over whether you want it conformed or not, but FCP does all the math for you. And 60p will "automatically" be at 40%. Hope that clears things up.

Here's a short tutorial that explains it pretty well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCVH2B4YPnA&feature=player_embedded

I agree we already have great slo-mo capability with VFR. However, when you shoot 60p using VFR you're giving up three features: (1) Pre-Record (2) Relay Record (3) Audio Recording. Plus you pretty much need to know in advance that you're going to want to slo-mo the footage.

Just finished a wildlife shoot where I wanted all three above-mentioned features - plus silky slo-mo. And I had no idea what I was going to get footage-wise and just needed to keep the camera rolling. So I shot everything at 60p which gave me the flexibility to get great slo-mo whenever I decided I wanted it...in post.

Hope to have a clip posted here tomorrow to demonstrate what 60p looks like in a 24p timeline - both when conformed and not. And, in case anyone is wondering, no...I didn't get the upgrade - this was shot on my AC160A - same thing.

EDIT: Okay, here's a short test of using 60p footage in a 24p timeline. First clip was just dropped in. Started conforming when the heron took flight in the second clip. I then used slo-mo at various times throughout. Had I shot VFR I wouldn't have had any audio. Not that the audio quality I got doesn't suck. When I got on location and heard the equipment from a nearby golf course I didn't even bother trying to get good sound and went with the onboard mic. Point is, if there wasn't a racket in the background I could have gotten good sound by shooting non-VFR 60p.

After the first clip of the heron, I didn't bother doing anything with the audio for the slo-mo parts so what you hear is how it sounds when conformed with the footage.

Don't know about anyone else, but the way this 60p footage placed into a 24p timeline looks is perfectly acceptable to me for something like this shoot. And by using non-VFR 60p I gained the flexibility to go original speed or slo-mo (with audio), and have both Pre-Record and Record Relay enabled - which for a shoot of this type were nice to have.

Just click in the white area in the video (next to the lock), type in "heron" and hit enter, and then Play -- I know - not very intuitive.

EDIT: Sorry, James...didn't realize the video wasn't showing up on iOS devices as an embed.

And when I want to do the opposite: Conform slow-mo footage 24p@60 fps to a 59.97 timeline? Is this also possible? Then I would have also the opportunity to do slow-mo in post whenever I need it. Right?
