Provideocoalition.com HPX-170 Review

Great stuff.

But I'm worried about that headphone jack, will I have to leave the cover open at ALL TIMES just to use a Headphone set?

It'll be ruined in a week if that's the case (the cover)

The headphone jack should've been were it was on the HVX, I think.

yeah that doesnt make a lot of sense to me either. i also dont like where they are putting the audio level knobs...

as ive said before (and this may change when i get my hands on one) i really dont care for the general physical design of the 170...

the overall aesthetics just look horsey to me - but i didnt care for the hvx either until i got my hands on it... i do like the idea of having all the ports in one place but i dont think having a single cover for ALL interface ports is a good idea. like daniel says above. if im using the headphone out, all the ports apparently will be exposed. i may end up drilling a hole in the cover to expose the headphone jack

and i guess im just used to having the audio controls on the rear and pulling the battery out the side rather than down.

POWER! yeah, thanks for asking. as you may see in the news, the coast is pretty well wasted. but houston is about 70 miles inland and there is still about 30% of the city without power. many of the traffic lights are either off or blinking red and traffic everywhere - which wasnt great to begin with is now utter crap.

my studio took on some water via roof leaks, but did get power back in 6 days. my home just got power back yesterday morning.

it was fun living by candlelight and going to bed at dark for a week. but i wont miss the COLD (or no) showers ; )

its kinda odd. driving home from the office at night. there is one street where one side of the area has power and one does not. youre driving along streetlight, streetlight, streetlight. then BAM! its just BLACK as far as you can see. i mean NOTHING. kinda creepy. there is still a midnight curfew city-wide

Yeah, drilling a hole might be a good idea, but at least the cover could be a removable one, which doesn't seem to be the case.

If not I'll use a small cabe coming out of the cover, if it's possible.

Still, a major design flaw in my opinion. Beats the whole sense of the cover if you have to leave it open whenever you're using the camera.

The USB 2.0 connection should've been there and the headphone jack should've been somewhere outside.

That would make sense.

I'm curious when he states -

"If you require the highest possible HD resolution, then you may want to keep looking—the HPX170’s HD images are very good, but a bit softer than the competition’s"

as to which cameras he might be referring to?

Sony PMW EX-1 probably.

1080 vs 1080 the HVX200A still doesn't hold a candle to the EX-1's resolution... but IMO it doesn't have to with the rest that it has. I.E The ability to pay itself off in a Commercial and Narrative world within weeks.

According to Adam the HPX-170 has a 10bit HD-SDI out.
Can someone verify this? I thought I read in this forum earlier that it was only going to be 8-bit like the Canon XL-H1

Yes, I see myself really needing to own both cameras for various reasons.

I have been renting & shooting with the EX1 for most of the year while hoping that the 170 would address more of my needs being that it has the SD capabilities. I really like the EX1, a lot, but I do have a bit of an issue with the "conforming long GOP" in FCP from a time constraint issue.

The lack of PAL capability (at the moment) with the 170 is a big deal for me and I think I am probably going to have to actually buy an EX1 this week because I have a few PAL shoots lined up over the next 8 weeks. I really did not want to have to do this, but since the 170 will apparently not be PAL capable any time soon, I really do not have a choice now.

My 170 arrives tomorrow and I am going to see what I can actually manipulate with the 24.98 setting on it.

I have been reading through the recent info about the changes to the upcoming Scarlet camera and I really do look forward to seeing the updated specs on that forthcoming camera.

Question about LCDS in terms of the 200 vs. the 170

According to Wilt's article, if I am reading this correctly, the 170 mechanically has the same LCD as the 200A with additional onscreen focussing aids?

I thought that I perceived from Green's write up that the 170's LCD was a dramatic improvement to the 200a, but after re-reading that again, I guess I projected too much on to that observation and the enhancement is actually the focussing aids, but not the LCD quality itself?

Can anyone offer a little more clarification on this? Thanks.

The european HPX, HPX171e, is pal/ntsc. Or you can upgrade your HPX170.
The LCD is the same, but there are new/improved focus assist functions.

Yes, I am aware of this.

But no, you cannot upgrade your 170 to PAL at this moment.

The upgrade is apparently "months" away as of 9/26.

It's the same on the DVC80 (and I assume the 100 variations). Plus you'd need it open anyway for the remote plugs. Not a big deal to me personally.

My question is can the headphone volume be adjusted in camera mode, or only in playback mode. On the 80, it can only be adjusted in playback mode, which seems insane to me. Headphone volume very much needs to be adjustable while recording.

Jim:

You can adjust it while recording on the HVX-200 so I would imagine it is the same on the HPX?

Everyone is all worried about rubber covers that really don't mean much unless you operate in adverse conditions, which most users dont. Most importantly, I guess I am the first to make a big deal about this, the HPX has a METAL headphone jack instead of the crappy plastic one on the HVX!!! This is so great, that was one thing that always bugged me about the HVX, stupid plastic headphone jack and stupid D-4 connector for component analog out. Both are fixed and I am stoked about it.

I agree, if the cover thing is a dealbreaker, drill a hole.

I shot this weekend with my DVX and I must say, I much prefer the audio level knobs on the left hand outside rather than the rear like the HVX has them. Easier to adjust on the side for me. They are too hidden away and typically in the dark on the HVX and when I am operating handheld, even worse being way back there on the back of the cam. Different strokes, I guess?

Best,

Dan
