ProVideo Coalition DSLR Shootout

No GH1...I hate that a casual glance around the net will bring up so many posts about 'mud' etc, that people like this might feel it's not worth testing.

Also, interesting that his book will be published in early 2010...doesn't it seem like the field is changing a lot to have already put something on paper? I guess the general principles will hold true...

agree, awful soon to put a book out about DSLR's when it's changing so rapidly and we are all still discovering limitations and workarounds. I would expect a clearer picture to emerge in a year or so.

If Panasonic could get their act together and fix the mud issue they would be in the ballgame. I had my money put aside for a GH1 and ultimately held out for the 7D because of this. Thats just one instance of a loss of $1500 for them...times that by much much more to get a real picture of the lost opportunity.

This is also money I was not planning to spend. I was not in the market for an SLR period and was happy to keep shooting with my old video cam, so these video sales are all cream and nothing to sneeze at.

Thanks for the tests though, informative.

Oh lord here we go with the "mud" again. Man it sure is funny how people are so prone to persuasion about something they have never experienced for themselves. It's funny because while everybody was talking about "mud" there were people actually using it wondering what the hype was about. I'd take possible mud over moire any day myself. I like flying under the radar with the GH1 though. Seeing everybody make comments online like "Was this the 7D?" on a GH1 video makes me chuckle.

So you are telling me I should have ignored the posts about that issue because I didn't experience it personally? I did lots of research because unlike some others 2k is a lot of money to me. I figured I could live with the ailasing issue of the 7D more than the artifact issue of the GH1, but that was a personal choice by me. My point is that they have lost money because of it.

Pretty lame tests if you ask me. The skin tone ones were mildly interesting, but I found it hard to compare when they didn't even attempt to get similar focal lengths on the shots - the disorientation of cutting from wide to medium was a big distraction from the color I was supposed to be evaluating and I had to ff/rewing multiple times to get past it.

also, why use average white balance? If you have controlled lighting then set it in advance, unless your goal is to just compare averaging algorithms...and in any case, did nobody think of using something like a color card as a reference point? There's a reason such things exist. Hell, you can get slates with colored clappers...those stripes aren't just there to look pretty, they're on a slate to provide black/white levels, and color too if you choose such a design.

Finally, the resolution of the facebook video is so low that..ah, forget it. Sorry PVC, the only word that springs to mind is 'craptastic'.

Second all that!

Boulder, I think the problem here is that unfortunately, if one does a lot of research online right now, they're going to hear a lot about mud/codec problems from other people who don't actually own the camera.

There was no 7D when I purchased my GH1 or I might have done the same thing as you. However, now that I own a GH1, I realize how overblown the problems are online. It's a curious thing.
