Pros/Cons of Anamorphic Adaptor vs Letterbox Matte

I hope we will see HD 4:3 aspect ratio on the GH1 soon, so we can buy cheap 2x anamorphic lenses and shoot 2.66 aspect ratio.

Isn't it possible to change the image size with the ptool?

I'm not sure if you can just change the resolution or the apsect ratio to.

Image size, yes. Aspect ratio, no.

The image will be skewed when you input x and y values that do not divide to a 1.78 aspect ratio.

Cropped question. If we matte out the top and bottom in front of the lens, a bit wider than the final 2.39:1 ratio (so you can do a clean edge in post). Wouldn't that percentage of black matte in camera, allow the compressor to be more efficient with the un matted picture detail?

So the top and bottom, compress very well as being only black, leaving more of the bits per second for the actual picture?

Thanks!

That's an interesting idea. The only thing I might consider is the sharp edge of the tape or whatever it is you use to cover the lens. The detail required to create the sharp edge in the video *could* take a bit of your overall bit rate to recreate. But, maybe I'm just crazy??

Won't work. You can't cleanly crop with a mask in front of the lens; it'll just show up as a fuzzy blob.

Oh true, because it will be too close to the lens and be out of focus. Doh! Thanks, Barry. I guess you could theoretically put something in front of the sensor? I'd never do that though :P

Would it be possible to use such a mask near the rear end of the lens?

I'm using old Minolta Rokkor lenses with a MD-m4/3 adapter. The adapter is a 3 cm long metall tube - plenty of space to ad a piece of plastik without getting to close to the sensore.

Has anybody tried something like this before?

Cheers
