ProRes RAW

wow, thanks for the info!

They even teamed up with Atomos. Very good news for me. Prores Raw is smaller than 422 but with flexibility of raw? Sounds good for my fs700+inferno combo.

Interesting. This is the first I'm hearing about it. Any cameras supporting this at this point? Or any announced forecast to do so? ...or is it just Atomos at this time?

This is interesting. As somebody who owns a C300 II, Atomos Sumo, and works in FCPX, I think I might actually have a reason not get rid of the Sumo. The older Prores just doesn't seem like a great codec vs Canon's built in MXF and especially RAWLite on the newer C200. CinemaDNG is just a waste of space and not supported by FCPX in a useable way. This Prores RAW looks like a RAWlite competitor with built in Apple support.

Apple even has a white paper for their "RAW" format which Canon still hasn't managed to do. https://www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/docs/Apple_ProRes_RAW_White_Paper.pdf

The big question is when Atomos actually manages to add support.

Very interesting news. Great to know that ProRes Raw would take less space than even ProRes.

Not sure how long it will take for the ProRes Raw adoption by camera makers. However the closed caption in the FCPX would be a nice addition.

This is quite an unexpected and exciting development! Having an end to end closed captioning workflow will save my team a lot of money but ProRes RAW sounds like a killer addition. It might allowing for HFR recording on the Inferno but I’m even more excited about what means for editing RAW on the Mac. Hopefully we’ll see several more camera manufacturers support the format as an internal recording option. The kind of performance they talking about makes the Premiere new support for CRL seem a bit anemic.

I was just about to buy a Odyssey 7Q+ but Convergent Devices doesn’t appear to be a launch partner. If they aren’t on board with the format I’m going to have to go with the Inferno.

You win Apple! I guess I’m finally buying a new Mac since all of my current machines are a few years old. It’s getting much harder to say that Apple isn’t committed to the pro market with a straight face.

I hope this means several camera mfg's will be premiering their support for this at NAB... seems like my FS7 is due for a nice FW update any day now...

And with performance optimized for macOS, editors can play full-quality 4K ProRes RAW files on MacBook Pro and iMac systems in real time without rendering.

This is definitely good for people shooting RAW ProRes - but I don't really believe performance is going to be what they say. RAW may be smaller in size and data rate over its alternatives but are we forgetting about debayering quality settings, color space and gamma conversion in "real-time"?

Very excited to see this release - I hope BMD DR adds support soon. Excited for a BMD camera supporting it too!

Personally, I hope this is the missing link for the C200.
Something between their CRL and MP4, either externally or even internally.
Would finally make sense.

I don’t think there is a “distortion field” in play here. In the white paper cpreston linked above, Apple seemed pretty specific about their configuration and and testing methodology. If they are fudging the numbers it will be pretty obvious next week when more people their hands on the new release of FCP.

One explanation for Apple’s better performance is they make the hardware much as RED does with their RED Rocket cards. The Final Cut Pro team sometimes bypasses OpenCL and directly leverage special instructions and APIs available on AMD and Intel’s hardware. Apple apparently did this with FCP 10.4 to give the iMac Pro better than expected H264 performance. The latest MacBook Pro’s do something similar with H265 where they have much better decoding than would be possible with software alone. Of course this doesn’t mean Apple’s debayer is going do as good a job as others, but I have high hopes. Personally I will be happy to finally have compressed 12-bit Sony FS HFR RAW available in affordable package. Fewer rentals puts a smile on my face.

This may explain why Panasonic is hosting a number of Varicam sessions at NAB with Atomos. ProRes RAW could transform the Varicam line! Compressed RAW could also make Alexa owners happy.

The moment Apple killed PC support for ProRes they killed ProRes.

I can't get excited for a new branch of a format that has zero future in the PC world (which accounts for the majority of video/film productions).

DNxHR is the universal future, and we all should be championing universal formats that don't exist just to sell Brand X computers.

I hope you're right but anyone with poor performance can just as easily have optimized media checked and all is good anyway.

I'm quite eager to try quad SDI from my F55 to the Inferno for 4K ProRes RAW and see how it goes.

Noticed FS5mkii added to the Inferno website.

Prores Raw on the Odyssey 7Q would be amazing! I hope they get the chance to add it by the summer! The lower data rates and even possibly RAW 60p to one SSD would be sweet!
