Proper audio levels and capturing

OK, when I record, my levels are getting into the red by maybe 1 or 3 "blocks" on the display.

However, when I capture into premiere 1.5, the levels are low, and I always seem to need to normalize the audio gain.

Am I not recording in the DVX100b properly? I always thought that getting the audio into the red wasn't a good thing.

Perhaps this is a premiere capture issue?

I use the scene 1 setting while shooting, if that helps. I typically use a wired lav. mic, but also a rode shotgun mic sometimes as well.

Well, I fixed it.

For anyone having the same problem, go to project, project settings, playback settings under the general section, and under realtime playback, click playback on desktop only.

Why is this not the default setting?
