So the story definitely carries this one, not the production value.

I helped a reporter friend of mine with a project for the pulitzer center being hosted by Youtube. It's purpose is to tell the story someone who contributes to his/her community. Simple enough. It had to be shot in one 24 hour period and be under 3 minutes in total runtime.

My friend works for Frontline on PBS and had access to a Sony Z1U... I have a DVX and now a Canon 7D. A big challenge of the 7D workflow has to do with the audio capture. The thing about an external audio recorder like the zoom h4n is that you've obviously got to sync the audio in post. If I was doing the editing, no problem, I'd sync it. But I was litteraly handing this footage off to a journalist with basic editing skills. She would not have been able to sync it. On the flip side, there is the Auto gain control if you plug directly into the camera, you'll get the hiss. So I considered using the Z1 or DVX just because I knew that I could get good audio captured and stuck to the video. In the end though, it's a contest, not a paying gig, and the 7D is too cool... so I just went for it.

I had the 7D, Tamron 17-50 2.8, Hoodman Loupe, and my wireless kit with some assorted mics. All hand held with no rig, you can kind of tell. (I had a tripod for the 2 sit-downs) I had the reporter roam around with a wireless shotgun mic on a pistol grip. I put the receiver in the hot shoe mount and ran it straight into the 7D. Then I prayed. Not being able to monitor your audio is very stressful. I hope to never do it again. I mean, couldn't they at least give us a headphone jack?? That friggin speaker or what ever you call it...

The audio definitely has a hiss. It's there, but causal viewers dont seem to mind or even notice. Of course I will be getting some type audio capture device, I just wasnt prepared on such short notice we had. However, I realized that having to sync up audio from an external device is just not practical if handing your footage off for someone else to edit.

One thing I did noticed about recording audio directly into the 7D was that you could still hear camera noise such as the zoom I make when we first see Sister Pat.

I didn't edit this piece. I just handed off the footage and made a note to fix the white balance on a few shots and try a low pass audio filter. The former I know wasn't fix because there is a scene where the outdoor light makes the whole thing blue. I'm not sure about the audio being filtered. I haven't talked to the editor yet but am looking forward to, he and the reporter did a great job cutting 2 hours of footage down to 3 minutes.

This video could be helped so much by some color correction/grading. I can't wait to get my hands on the project and post the results. I know it will make it pop so much more.

I'd love a 5 star rating from you if you enjoyed what these Sisters are doing... not even based on the quality of the video. This is a contest, so I'm trying to spotlight it as much as possible.

Thanks for watching. Free free to ask questions.
