progresive footage in a interlaced project???

HI:

I have a quick and kind of basic question.

I Cant really seem to figure this out...

I got my HV20 last week (PAL). Did my first shooting (in HDV 25p mode) and then decided to test the capturing possibilities in Avid Media composer.
From what I had read in a million posts, I was sure I was going to end up having to go to something like Vegas or Premiere, to be able to edit the footage from this camera, but Avid recognized it without problem...captured the footage without problem …of course in a 1080i 50 HDV project…

So my question is:
Is there really a difference in capturing “real progressive”, say in Vegas, Premiere or HDVSplit…if in the end the 25p mode in the HV20 is actually “progressive” delivered in interlaced mode?
Has anyone noticed this difference? Like loosing that cinematic look..because of working in an interlaced project?

In the past I’ve always edited my 25p footage, shot with the DVX100BE on an 25i because someone once told me that the image once recorded in progressive never looses the “progressive” filmic look… even if working on a interlace project..

Is this correct? Is it the same with the HV20?

Thanks in advance!

First of all capturing will be the same for all software unless you are converting it on the fly. It will always be a 1440x1080/50i video with 25Mbps bitrate and HDV compression for the PAL version. So you cannot capture progressive but record progressive. All you need to do is when you use 25p mode de-interlace your captured video using blend the fields method. You will get your true progressive video back.

As for your film look, it is related to the frame rate more than being progressive. In NTSC models, after removing the pulldown you will see a difference between 24p and 60i/30p mode but in PAL models other than the interlacing artifacts it doesn't make a difference between 25p or 50i since they both have 25 full frames.

Hi. I have an additional basic question related to the topic.

If I use Premiere Pro CS3/CS4 and my goal is to make a standard definition 60i DVD with a film look, should I edit in HDV-60i sequence or HDV-24P sequence? My footage was shot in HV20's HDV24P (over 60i) mode.

My guess is that, in order to get the film look, I need to create a 24P DVD, or else it's pointless to edit in HDV-24P sequence. Unfortunately I don't have a progressive DVD player to test it myself...

Thanks in advance for your reply!
