Professional APS-C Video Camera from Canon

Straight forward from Canon Rumors:

Canon is working on a pro video camera that has a 1x APS-C CMOS sensor able to capture up to 120hz or full frames a sec. Fab specs show 12.1MP. The body will be similar to that of the XL H1 with an EOS mount fully manual controls. Canon is working on 2 lenses for the system launch that have quick video AF motors and be compatible with Instant AF like their current video line. One will be a wide starting at 16mm and the other will be a tele zoom starting at 70mm.

While I can’t directly comment on the dSLR video modes being restricted, I believe they are lowering the options for this system to be launched sometime in 2010. Other specs on the firmware of the camera are: 720p 60,30 1080p, 24, 30 and 60. EF and EF-S lens compatibility including Teleconverters. Will not work with Sigma as the mount communication protocol is somewhat changed, those lenses will have to be sent in for an updated firmware. Tamrons seem to be unaffected or at least not mentioned. The video format will be a flavor of MPEG 4 with a roof at 56Mbits/sec. Work is being done on a video RAW format that will be 12bit only, and will need a special IO module separate from the default package.

While no pricing has been set, they target under 8k for the base system with the 16mm WIde and 4k or more for the IO module with uncompressed SDI Out and USB 3.

Storage system will be based on the CFast Spec! One Slot Only.

More info available as things progress.

Don’t expect EOS vDSLRs to get any better at recording exotic frame rates or get manual control.

Specs may change but I’ll keep you updated.

Canon's large video division is EXACTLY why I have been predicting that Nikon (with NO video business) will come to our rescue with an affordable 35mm video imager. They have nothing to loose, and the technology is there--just a few basic engineering tweaks and our problems are solved. Canon has too much vested interested in the high end video market to risk a 'low' priced 35mm competitor at this time.

In time, Canon and Panasonic will have to respond with more affordable options--but they will follow, not lead here.

Here is the thing though, Canon has no high end video market. They make great cameras, but you just cannot compare them to Sony or Panasonic, which actually do have a huge "high end" video market.

I think Canon should get themselves in order, strap on a pair, and dive headfirst into this market/tech. They have a small window of opportunity here.

There's no way in hell this is real. A packaged 16mm lens? That's the first mistake. It would at least have to come with a zoom that cover wide and telephoto.

Wishful thinking.

hehe...this is the company that brought us 20p....they're giving it to us with a strap-on

By the time this comes out I'll be making films with my full frame 1080p 24p 40Mbps manual control D800......but unfortunately I won't be able to shoot 20p with it.

I think Canon not having a "pro" line of camera leaves them with a huge advantage. The were the first "red" on the scene (L1 and then the XL1). Giving the public a camera that competes with their "pro" cameras is going to be really hard for Panasonic and Sony. But I'm a Panasonic man all the way so my fingers are crossed.

Don't know if it's a fake or not. But the 16mm refer to the short focal end of the lens. With an APS-C sensor that is equal to about 25mm full frame.

I think it would something like a zoom starting at 16 to 70mm and then starting at 70 to 200mm. (as I look into the crystal ball??)

The text says: "One will be a wide starting at 16mm and the other will be a tele zoom starting at 70mm." Quite sure that you are right with your asumption.

Don't see what the big deal is about a packaged lens that starts at 16mm, when they already start at 18mm, in all those 18-55mm's. I don't think they meant a 16mm prime lens. This would be a smart move on Canon's part, cuz then they would have a whole bunch of new buyers for their lenses.
This is all just rampant speculation, like a lot of stuff on the net, and I will not be holding my breath to see if this ever materializes. Canon tends to be rather conservative in their video cameras.

Oh okay, I didn't read that part.

I still don't think it's probable, though. Just logistically it sounds incorrect. Will it have a PL option? The only way to get it to stick in a professional environment (where the real money is at) is by offering a mount for professional cinema glass, not just their zoom lenses.

Maybe the word "professional" is overvalued. Today it's mostly used for marketing...

But something like the camera descibed on Canon Rumors would be the next logical step after the 90D - 5DmkII - GH1 evolution, maybe with one more intermediate step...

Its what I've been waiting for. I was thinking twice as much as the 5D II in a video package, so it's a bit more. No more 35mm adapter, EF and my C/Y lenses and actually useable sound in.
