Process

So i have my movie done, its a quick time file...how do i get this on a theatre screen? Lol, I'm sure you dont just haand them the mov file, that's why i want to know the 'process'

I use to work as a projectionist and our owners were localy based. They probably would have let us show a non commercial release film after hours (which would have been at like 3am) but I doubt any national cinema company would let you do this.

If there's a small indie theatre in your town then I'd ask them first if you could even do a screening. Some play theatres also have screening capabilities and it would be easier for you to have a showing there, as you could most likely run your movie digitally (some high schools even have nice facilities). I've been involved in the 48 hr film fest in a few different cities and we usually have screenings at smaller places like that.

Film transfers are very $$$ I wouldn't even consider that.

Ah Como, the exhilaration of youth is always refreshing. You realize of course you have years of due payin' to do before you get to this.

Now go work on your website. And your reel.

Ya that's my second question, im starting a reel but i dont really know how to make one lol Im doing it in after effects...

For the theater thing. Some theaters will rent out for private screenings for a flat fee, but its your responsablity to fill the seats.

What is the process, from shooting, to screening, to get your movie on a local cinema?

I love this guy! So philosophical! He's not one to ask for some niggling little details here or there - no. He goes for the broad, you could say metaphysical questions that go to the nature of the human condition. The question may require a book length to answer, but he's not discouraged, he has the courage to go ahead and ASK. I mean, "what's the process from shooting to get to the local cinema" - a classic. I find his approach inspiring. It's got me thinking - why not continue this line of questioning? Why not be brave? You could start with "guys, how can I shoot a movie?" (and I've seen such questions here), then go broader "how can you make it?" or just "how can one?" and even further, at the ultimate philosophical end point, a simple single question:

"HOW?"

Love it, love it, love it. Just wanted to give some positive feedback, even if I don't have any immediate solutions to some of these heavy questions. ROCK ON!!!!

You're basically talking about 4 walling a theater. You will be charged a flat fee for the exhibition of the film - a pretty hefty fee. Also, you'll have to exhibit at a smaller theater chain or art house - you aren't going to get Edwards or Krikorian.....

Also, the number of theaters with digital projection is very few....you'll need to make a 35mm release print.

I guess that all depends on where you are.
Here in Austin, for example, we have quite alot of theaters with digital projections setup.
Yes, film is still much more common - but off the top of my head I know of 4 different theaters that have digital projection here (each with multiple screens).
So....it's a somewhat decent percentage.

But, first things first Como - get your movie done...then we can help you figure out how to get it into a theater for a screening.
:)

Dude, no hate, quite the opposite! I just think it's awesome - you are young, and it's absolutely wonderful. Heck, I envy you. One only gets to be young once. The idealism, the requisite naivete, the fresh-faced optimism - this is just fantastic... I wish I had all that all over again :) :) :)

Hey Luis, do you know if The Draft House here in Austin still does screenings for Austin Film Society members? I have been considering a membership and that would be a good reason for it.
