Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Hayden, unfortunately I don't have time right now to do any more samples. But the software is free to try so, assuming you have some footage, you should try it for yourself.

Only by using your own footage will you be sure if this is the right method for you.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

guys,
i still don't get it:
at what point do i get rid of my letterbox blackbars?
what i have is: uncropped/unletterboxed 4:3 PAL (!) footage.
i first want to adjust the framing (by cropping?),
than i need to uprezz, so i can mix this with XL2 anamorphic footage.
does uprezzing mean, i scale the image so big that the blackbars will "fall of the frame" of a 16x9 comp?
since the 720 lines always stay the same, it will be anamorphic footage afterwards, right?
So what is the exact anamorphic PAL frame size?
The one Disjecta posted?
Couldn't i scale to 1024x576 and tell my editing app its a square pixel animation?

Hey, Brett. How come you don't register?

Anyway, this would be a good one for Barry Green to try out - he's the one with the deep pockets. 8)

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

B&H has it for $400

Considering all the other things it does it seems like a great deal. Christmas...yep. I sent them a email explaining what Im trying to do. Since they have firewire/DV related products they might be able to give a good answer.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

It has S-Video and componet in/out but no firewire. I asked them about that and their future plans. I'll let you guys know.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Deep pockets? Where'd you get that idea? Only thing in my deep pockets is lint. :)

Um, seriously, this is one of those things that could be the find of the century or useless, it all depends on how it performs. It does look interesting, but I've watched some DVX up-rezzed to HD and all I can say is, it depends. Sometimes it looked fantastic. Sometimes it didn't.

If they want to send me one to review, then I'd be glad to!

However, the big question, as Brett hinted at, is: how do you record it? You'd need some sort of HD deck, and those don't come cheap. You could use a DVHS deck, which does come cheap, but I don't know what quality you'd get from an SD source uprezzed by a $400 converter and recorded on a 25mbps MPEG-2 tape... but hey, it's worth looking at, certainly.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Could you just do a straight capture into a computer/hard drive? Sounds like it would open you up to recording without DVHS's 25Mbs MPEG2 compression. If so then great. Its not like you have to carry all of this equipment with you on the shoot. Shoot as normal and then uprez later in the studio on play back. Now the question is which store has a demo on the shelf ;-)

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Hello folks,

Can someone post the procedure for the PAL footage?

What is the correct size? I read some figures that were posted, but nothing was explained further.

Thanks in advance

Fidel.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Well I sent a email to the HDUP1500 guys and unfortunately received a short response that didnt answer any of the questions I asked and we wanted to know. Anyone that wants to look into this product any more please do and post it for everyone.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Hey Disjecta-

When I try to load the quicktime movie from your first post on this topic, my browser just hangs. Have you removed it?

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

By the way, it seems to me from the grabs I've seen that uprezzing using Prozoom does something similar to a sharpen effect, except that it may use previous and following frames for additional quality?...

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Sorry Speedbump, I removed it when I changed ISPs but I just uploaded again so you should be able to access it now.
I don't know that I'd say it's superior.  It may be.  I think Disjecta believes it definitely is.

If you're not using the anamorphic, then for a film transfer I'd shoot letterbox and up-rez to PhotoZoom for your 16:9 release, but let the film transfer house up-rez the letterbox footage for the film release.
I saw the great before and after shots on page 3 of this thread. I was hoping that someone could do some comparisons of squeeze vs. Photozoom. Are we sure the advantages that Photozoom is creating isn't just a sharpening effect that could be done post in Vegas and other NLE's after using squeeze?

disjecta, will we see you with that new anamorphic adapter when it is released as opposed to using Photozoom or will you have the adapter and use photozoom in addition? Just curious where you see yourself going when it's released...

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Thanks D, got to see the clip at last. The difference is noticable and worth considering the investment...

Gotta love that 'water dolly'!

:D

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Jonathan,

Because I use the teleconverter so much, I would probably not get the anamorphic lens. It would mean a messy workflow for me but it's not out of the question. I have to say the price is offputting, it will be basically half the price of the camera.

We'll see...

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

I'm not sure I would spend the money on the Panasonic anamorphic even if I had the money :P. It's just too tempermental. Especially given the price....

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Shaw, I believe he was talking about the "new" anamorphic, which I assume is the upcoming Century Optics version. It's touted to be free of the Panasonic's short falls.

Re: Procedure for uprezzing 4x3 letterbox to 16x9

Ah ok. Still though, you have to focus both the adapter and the camera. While better it still seems a little convoluted. But then again I'm the one trying to make a 2.35 adapter to what am I saying (it won't have focus problems though!)!
