problems with final cut

Hi guys... i worked with a p2 store and apple laptop for the past couple of days shooting a music video. After capturing all the clips and converting them to quicktime, i tried to put the clips on the timeline and fcp just crash every time. i reinstalled fcp but it still does the same thing. Please help...

I think you'd get more responses if you gave a little more info like what version of FCP are you using. What mac laptop. Workflow. Etc.

Sorry abt that... i am using fcp 5.04 and a g4 laptop. I manage to transfer all the files to an external hard drive and imported all these clips into fcp. All of which are in the quicktime format. when i view the clips in the fcp viewer it plays fine, but when i drag it to the timeline..fcp crashes. i have checked my seq settings and all are correct. Now even my previous projects cant play on the time line...Please Help... i got to deliver a rough cut of the project by monday. Thanks

What laptop model do you have, how much RAM is installed, and what is your external hard drive that holds these clips?

I agree with Ben B. Is Ram original ram or did you add it after. Could be bad. Is there enough ram. Is hard drive fast enough for your needs. You never mention what format you are shooting in. Is computer fast enough. If you've checked these things and are still having problems I would delete FCP preferences and start fresh. If you're still having problems maybe a reinstall of FCP is needed. And if you're still having problems the use of disk warrior to clean up any OS issues and a repair of disk permissions booting off your OS disk might help.

If your having a problem with things that worked before, you should look into re-installing FCP..
Have you recently upgraded your OS?
Added new programs to your computer?
Erased anything?

You need to figure out what you did since it worked before..
I would try copying some clips to your internal HD and see if they play on your timeline..

Hi guys, thanks for all your help. I reinstalled fcp but it still didnt work. Then i reformatted my hard drive and it worked like a baby. Dont know what the real problem was but its working now and thats all that matters. Thanks again for your post and help.

Did you try running Disk Utility and Disk Warrior on all your drives? I've fixed many of these things and never had to reinstall anything before. The really bad cases, Disk Warrior was all we needed. First thing I would have done is download FCP Preference Attic (free beta software that beats the hell out of FCP Rescue) and trash my FCP prefs.

Glad its working.. :) always a good thing.. But it's always a good thing to try to fix it so you know what the problem is incase is comes up again.. Formatting your drive should be your last option..
