Problems with DVX200

Hi all,

So I have noticed 4 problems with the DVX200 since I started working with it last week (shooting from the balcony and around the house is no test!)

1. Motion blur - this is my primary concern and it's exhibited most prominently in V-Log mode. I can see a smear in movement and the image repeats itself. Kind of like ghosting. The other modes all exhibit it as well and it makes all movement in the image look ugly. I am shooting in 25p, but it's in every framerate and mode. I have tried all manner of things, but the real test is V-log since most of the scene file settings are disabled.

2. I noticed today when shooting in HD that there was a lot of moire. It was even present in a moustache.

3. Audio monitoring is very low. When I shot with any other camera, I could hear all the ambient noise in the room, and this is so important when doing an interview. Today I couldn't hear people in the background chatting, which is a total fail if the client gets into the edit and sees that I didn't pick up on a background noise.

4. Loss of detail. There seems to be smudging of facial features. I have all the skin tone stuff turned off, high sens mode is off. I have been over the settings again and again, using the manual, trial and error, using Barry Green's e-book. I'm stumped.

I am convinced that the visual issues areal down to one problem and that if I solve it, I solve all of them. I may have a faulty unit. Help!

Just a guess, but something to do with shutter speed being too long.....? Set longer than the framerate?

The other thing which may cause "ghosting" is inter-frame noise reduction. (Compares frames to average out noise, and works reasonably well except where there's movement.)

Hi,

Framerate is 25 so shutter is generally 50, but I have tried experimenting and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Is there a setting that controls noise reduction other than the obvious detail coring/high sens mode etc? Most of that stuff is disabled in V-Log...

I have 3 new dvx200 with the same problem.
I changed the color profiles, but I do not like, the skintone in any case is horrible, the shaded areas are full of noise and have a saturation similar to that of mobile phones.
I'm really disappointed to have bought these cameras.

Another problem is the white balance that works well in automatic, but in manual you will never get to have white as the automatic ...

It is a machine with shocking mistakes, without considering of idiocy with which they composed the menu

Anyone have any more ideas? Banging my head against the wall with this one. Any chance I have a faulty unit?
Have you taken this up with the dealer you got the camera from? It's possible it may be something simple that they know about - in which case, sorted! Or if a faulty unit, exchange it - again, sorted!

Alternatively, if they can't - and if it's too much of a problem for you to live with - the sooner you bring it up, the easier it will be to get them to take it back for a refund.

Yeah, latest firmware. It's baffling. In particular the ghosting. I'd love to go to the dealer but they're a last resort in this case. Customer services is a bit lacking here. I'll chat to the Panasonic rep here, maybe he knows, but I doubt it. I'm seeing this popping up in other places as well but with no solution still.

Did you figure this out? I am using a demo for a week and I have not seen any of these ghosting issues at all. Latest firmware. Testing in V log 24p mostly, and also liking scene file 4 for many things. My only problems with this camera are no loupe for the VF...and a balanced shoulder rig. My Z recoil does nothing for it without a different VF, and that would mean no touch screen control as well as another $1500 for a Gratical I don't want. Lots of aftermarket things need to be developed for this tool. But the picture quality is great and this is a possible next EX3-like Swiss Army Knife camera, with larger sensor and easy shallow dof with the Leica lens. It's also much easier to operate than my FS7--which is NOT a run and gun camera. This one is.

Hi, still not figured it out! Agreed about the fs7. Beautiful camera, not run and gun. Hope to sort out my dvx this week.

Here's another example:

Is it possible that the new firmware reduces noise in V-Log and causes this?

Your sample looks significantly under exposed. What does it look like with a couple more stops exposure?
I've seen similar motion artifacts on every Panasonic low end camera of recent vintage, including the GH series since the first one. I think it is compression artifacts. Try the highest bit rate i-frame codec the camera can shoot to see if that helps. But underexposure and compressed AVC always looks ugly to me.

It's in every state, even with more exposure and I'm certain it's not supposed to do this. It's also v-log ungraded. Also tried in different bit rates, frame rates and codecs. Looks to me like a faulty unit seeing as no one can solve it!

I can see the ghosting on my laptop, but not on my iMac. Clean as can be on all sorts of settings, v-log-L, and Luts on the iMac. Horrible ghosting on my laptop using the same editing software. How weird is that?

It looks like you are in the mud with this shot and the camera is struggling to see anything. Light it to proper levels and see what you get. This sensor needs a lot of light.

I also shot in proper daylight and the same thing happened. What I'm trying to say is the video is irrelevant. The other guy has a better video. This is the artifact, it happens in every state and every mode, I just didn't have a lot of light and I wanted to show the effect. Also, the original file is actually clearer and more contrasty. YouTube didn't do it any favours.

That aside, even in low light, it shouldn't do that!
