T2i PROBLEMS w/ SD 16gb Class 10

ADATA SD HC 16GB Class 10

I bought this card about 10 days ago and have been using it almost every day on both stills and video, I've transferred both pictures and video to the computer successfully about 5 times. Yesterday I shot some amazing photos and I went to preview them this morning to narrow down my very best shot on my large screen and to my surprise the card was unreadable. The camera said to format the card. So I removed the card and tried it in another camera and it said the card was unreadable. I tried seating differently with fractional distances thinking it might have been something to do with contacting or something and no luck. I tried my patriot card and it worked fine. I finally took it back to the store, to complain. They tried another of the same exact 16gb class 10 card by ADATA and to my surprise the new card was reading the same issue! brand new card... They put that card into the card reader and it read fine on the computer. Finally we tried a Patriot 16gb class 10 and it worked, so I exchanged them. I also bought a 16gb class 6 ADATA card to try and it works fine so I am confused what this issue could be. The other card worked fine until it stopped working so I am rushed to use these cards to see if the issue replicates itself, before I use them on a production.

I wanted to ask and FYI of this issue because this could have been catastrophic in a paid production scenario. I have just been practicing around the house and around the city. I had just taken some awesome pictures from the roof of a high rise that I lost because of this. ugg.

I don't trust the cheap card brands yet. I usually stick w/ Sandisk, Lexar, Panasonic, RiData...etc.. The A-Data and Patriot brands have years to go before I trust them...

Sorry to hear for your loss, but good thing it wasn't a paid gig... much less a wedding shoot!

It was inevitable and I knew I was going to get that, I have never had a problem with a patriot card that Ive had for at least 2-3 years. I didnt consider that to be unreliable, & I thought that SD solid state cards where pretty solid... now I know thats not the case.

WHAT SD CARD do you use with your CANON DSLR's?
& Have you ever had an Read/Write ISSUE?

I am wondering about a 16-gig Patriot Class 10 card that I got from Newegg two days ago. I have seen some initial weirdness, which is scary.

Yesterday, when shooting video with the T2i, it had an error in reading to the card and told me to reformat it. I shut the camera off, turned it back on, and the card seemed to be OK.

Today, after some test shooting in 720p60 mode, I downloaded the clips and half of them would not open with Quicktime. I got the message: "The movie could not be opened. An invalid public movie atom was found in the movie." I'm not making that up. That's actually what it said. Half of the clips were OK (these had the usual frame thumbnail image icon), and the other half would not open and had the strange "public atom" message (these clips had a generic Quicktime icon, not an image thumbnail). These bad clips could not be opened by MPEG Streamclip, either.

One other detail: I was shooting with an Olympus 50mm lens using an OM-to-EOS adapter, in manual mode. I don't know if that would have made any difference, and will be doing some testing with a Canon kit lens and this Patriot card.

If anyone has run into this "invalid public movie atom" message, I would be most interested in any advice you have.

It means that at a very low level, something is messed up in your movie.

A QuickTime movie is made up of a heirarchy of containers, called "atoms". Atoms come in two varieties: atoms may contain other atoms, or they may contain data. The first four bytes of the atom give tthe length of the atom in bytes, the next four give the name of the atom, and the rest of the bytes are the data carried by that atom: either raw data or more atoms. The error is telling you that the structure of the movie is wrong, that the actual file does not match its description.

If you are truly lucky, then the problem is an invalid length specification for the top level "moov" atom. Normally, the first four bytes of a QuickTime movie give the length of the moov atom, which is equal to the total length of the file. Try making a copy of the movie and opening the copy with a hex editor. If the first four bytes are not the same as the length of the file, try fixing them and see if that repairs the movie. If not, then the problem is deeper and/or more complicated.

WARNING: Perform surgery ONLY on COPIES of your movies!

i've been using two of the ADATA 16 gig class 10 cards, shot a whole concert series over 3 days and a short film. No issues yet.

I would take everything off that card that is important and be careful moving forward! Also
carry a backup, until there is some more info on this, (JUST TO BE SAFE)

(BECAUSE) THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED TO THE PATRIOT 16gb LX class 10 CARD. It actually went out way faster that the ADATA. I noticed it seems to happen when you start to take pictures fast, like when in action/sports mode.

I HAVE SINCE USED THE 16GB CLASS 6 and no issues yet.

I should note that I have been shooting in RAW+L,fine the entire time &, this may had something to do with the CLASS 10 card issue, but I dont know right now, I dont have the time or extra $ to be test dummy for these cards & canon.

Maybe someone else can shed some more light.....

Jimbee,

when shooting video with the T2i, it had an error in reading to the card and told me to reformat it. I shut the camera off, turned it back on, and the card seemed to be OK.

This also happened to me right before the card went out, FYI....

shot another short film over the weekend, both of my cards are the ADATA 16 gig cards. No problems at all. Flawless 12 hour day.

I had this issue as well, here's Canon's response:

The camera has not been tested with class 10 memory cards. I would
recommend using a Class 6 card with this camera. As the camera may not
be able to to fully communicate with the card you have.

and (luckily) here's Patriot's:
For the Canon T2i device, if you are having issues or errors it may be
due to an incompatible firmware in the SDHC Card. If you send your card
in under warranty, we will replace your card with one that has a
firmware with better support for this particular Canon Device.

So i'm going to send these off tomorrow. I'm guessing they'll just send me Class 6 cards. I'll update here when I get them back.

Patriot is ****ing me. Because I bought these from an eBay seller (NEW, mind you) they're refusing to honor warranty. Now I just have to hope the eBay seller will take opened returns 2 weeks after the fact.

I'm using a Transcend 16 GB class10 with my 550D - it works well!
I only bought class10 because it was the same price like class6 :-)
No camera needs class10 cards.

Canons cameras make videospeed with Guiness-suspicious 43 Mbps - these are 5.4 MBps.
My Transcend class6 cards write with 10-12 MBps ... that's more then enough.
Transcend class10 writes with > 14 MBps, this is hyperkill.

I got many problems with my 16GB Patriot class 6 cards. I lose about half of all my shots cuss they cant be read/dont play back. Nobody should buy a Patriot card. Today After shooting the day before, I shot some more skateboarding shots, and all of a sudden I realized I couldn't play back the footage from the day before. The card some how corrupted the files.

Rented out my camera with just the two A-Data cards for 4 days, then shot a promo for another full day. Swap between two cards and never any issues.

I'm going to grab some more cards down the road just for safety and more storage but the i've had not even a single lost or corrupt file.. maybe i'm just lucky?

I am gettin my patriot LX class 10 replaced with new firmware versions that are supposed to work better with the t2i. I will report back when I have them. If not I am going sandisk extreme.

I just received 2 - 16g class Patriot SD HC cards and am having the same (ON BOTH CARDS) "An invalid public movie atom" problem after transferred to the computer via the EOS Utility program.

In the field it started with a failure to playback video files then also some stills. I am using my new Canon T2i.

Think it would be both of the cards? I haven't had a (video) file capture bigger than just over a gig either before the camera automatically quits recording.

Not cool.

I just bought a Patriot Class 10 16GB card for use with a T2i, I have yet to receive the camera itself though. Based on this discussion I'm strongly considering returning it to Amazon when it arrives...

Any suggestions on comparably priced alternatives? Should I just go Class 6 instead?

I had the same problem as elapheysal with 2 of the Patriot 16-gig class 10 cards. The first one I sent back to Newegg and they sent a replacement. Same problems. I sent the second one back after begging to get a store credit rather than another replacement Patriot Class 10. Newegg was very good about the exchange. Now I have a Transcend 16-gig class 6 on the way to replace the Patriot. I wonder if it is something about the Class 10 Patriot that does not allow it to work with the T2i. Or maybe I was just unlucky twice.
