problem with vtr mode?

Hi,

I just bought a new hvx200, and although this is in no way what i got it for, I sometimes hook it up with a video in and capture some stuff off cable. Now i'v stumbled upon this webpage:

http://www.panasonic.ca/English/Broadcast/broadcast/hd/faq1.asp#1

it had this to say on the subject:

"27. Can I use the HVX200 as a Mini-DV VTR source?

Using cameras as a VTR source is possible, but if this is a function that the user would like to do all of the time, Panasonic recommends that the purchase of a VTR.
"

now here is my question:

I was wondering if that suggestion is because panasonic thinks that people would not get the best quality when using the camera in vtr mode, or could it be in some way harmfull to the hardware to be in vtr mode too much.

Any light shed on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You'll wear out the tape heads and the drive mechanism on your cam if you use it for playback.

Most folks use a vtr deck or an old old camcorder for this purpose.

I'm personally avoiding tape altogether.

that makes sense, but what if I didnt use tape, and I captured video in and transferred it direct to hard drive, I havent even tried that to know if its possible but if it is I think I would wanna do that like once or twice a week. Do you think that that could be at all bad for the camera?

I didnt think that would cause problems, but since I dion't know much about the technicalities I though I should ask, especially since panasonic had an official statement on the topic. Anyways I appreciate the responses guys, and if somene has any more info please, I'm all ears. :)

Sorry, mk23.

I misread your post.

There should be no problems.

I think the panasonic statement refers to using the camera in tape playback mode.

The HVX should playback from p2 indefinitely... since there are no moving parts involved.

cool, I've had bad experiences with electronics messing up for no obvious reason, im really hoping to take care of this one :) .

Thanks a lot guys :)
