problem with p2 ingest with lion

I'm using FCP5 on a brand new iMac computer with Lion, and I cannot ingest the clips from my p2 card. I'm using my HPX170 in place of a card reader. This process works fine in the same version of FCP on my Macbook Pro, which is still running Tiger. On the new computer, in the FCP window for importing p2 footage, a message just says it's idle. Anyone else had this problem? I'm assuming there's a driver I need to install, but I've poked around online, and the only thing I can find is that Lion is 64-bit and the current p2 driver is only 32-bit. Not sure what that even means for this process. Looking for some help.

I'm actually not having trouble running FCP (it is 5.1.4) on the new machine, just importing the p2 footage. And the import works just fine with Tiger. So what am I missing with Lion?

I'm not certain how to answer your question.

However, if you go to Apple's knowledge base site, and do a search you will see that only FCP 7 is supported in Lion, and that support requires a specified installation procedure.

FCP 5.1.4 is about six years old now.

I've been using FCP5 in Lion with no issues, except for the p2 ingest. My question is whether or not Lion and p2 are compatible. I'm guessing that somehow they are, but I'll look elsewhere for an answer. Thanks.

Good luck.

From what you have indicated, however, if the computer sees the mounted card, but the import p2 volume doesn't work, then that function isn't compatible.

I know of no one running 5.1.4 in Lion.

Apple indicates that only FCP 6 and FCS3 are compatible with Snow Leopard.

That makes 5.1.4 incompatible with SL and Lion.

Note as well that EULA of FCP 5.1.4 about installing on two computers.

Unless you have two licenses.

Well, you know of someone now who is running 5.1.4 in Lion.

I finally got a hold of someone at Panasonic, and he told me they are working on an updated p2 driver that will work with Lion. It will be a free download from their website, a nice alternative to the expensive software upgrade suggested above. For anyone else who stumbles across this thread who is having the same problem, Panasonic said it would be available by the end of the year (2011).

As far as how many computers you can use, the EULA allows for installation on up to three machines. Even the folks at Apple cheerfully told me they would help me get past that in order to keep using the software.

Incidentally, upgrading to FCP7 is completely beside the point, as the current p2 driver doesn't work with Lion at all, regardless of the version of Final Cut.

Apparently, not with the feature you wish.

Did you ask Panasonic if the p2 driver will work with 5.1.4? Let us know when you do.

That would be incorrect

you are granted a limited non-exclusive license to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on one Apple-branded desktop computer and one Apple-branded laptop computer so long as both computers are owned and used by you.

That EULA is for FCP2 and later.

It was more restricted with 5.1.4

I'd suggest doing a little more research on your issue, particularly with the intended compatibility with the new "p2 driver," 5.1.4, and Lion.

With all due respect, you may be missing the point.

The p2 driver was designed, to my knowledge, to allow you to mount the cam in either USB2 or FW Connect mode.

We haven't needed that since Leopard.

If the cam mounts now, and I believe you said it does, then the issue is whether 5.1.4 "import p2 volume" will work in Lion.

FCP 6.0.x replaced import p2 volume with "log and transfer." The p2 driver doesn't have anything to do with importing.

But you seem to know what you are doing.

good luck though
