Problem with Importing files from external hard drive

I'm currently doing my editing on final cut pro HD. I'm
shooting 1080i/25p on the HVX200. I'm able to connect my
camera via firewire and import the HD footage into FC without a
problem. However when I transfer the HD footage to a hard drive I
can't seem to be able to import the footage from the hardrives into
Final Cut Pro. Any ideas?

You need to make sure when you copy the P2 card contents onto an external hardrive that you keep the same file structure in place. Each card (which when copied becomes a regular folder) has to contain a 'contents' folder and a 'lastclip.txt' file. if these two things are not in the folder final cut does not recognize it as a P2 card (Because all P2 cards consist of these two items with all the recorded info inside the 'contents' folder).
You can name the card whatever you like (eg. card 001 etc) but inside that folder you can't change any names. There must be a folder named 'contents' and a 'lastclip.txt' file.
Many people make the mistake of renaming these files, or just copying certain folders over. you have to keep the folder structure the same as how the camera makes it on a card. this apply's to P2 cards & firestores (even though a firestore has other folders in there it still has those two things.)
So keep that structure consistant right through the process until you do the final cut 'import P2'.

Hey Matthew

Thanks for that advice. I just gave it a crack and it worked fine. I'm also from New Zealand but currently doing a round the world trip on a racing boat called earthrace and making a doco about it.

Once again Cheers

Ryan
