Problem with HDV and PP 2.0

I purchased and received an XHA1 a couple of weeks ago but I'm not able to capture the HDV footage I've shot on Premiere Pro 2.0. I shot the footage with HDV and 24F. Now, I've downloaded and correctly placed the files for the Canon HDV presets, and I've opened a new project with the right settings (Canon 24F HDV), but when I try to capture the footage the screen where the footage should appear is blank. It says "Capture Device Offline" on the top, but yet I'm able to control the camera with the buttons on the bottom of the window.

My computer specs:

Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz
4 GB Ram
GeForce 7900 GS

In another thread I created on the Premiere board I was told that these specs would be adequate for using HDV with PP 2.0. What am I doing wrong? Another thing I might want to point out is that I'm currently using the Trial version, could that be the problem?

I'd either try the CineForm solutions Apsect HD. or I would try downloading the trial of Sony Vegas as I just discovered that program is pretty damn savvy :P Good luck. BTW I'm editing on a 1.8 dual core Athlon with 2gb of ram. And it's as good as dv footage so you're even better off than me on that point.

im having the EXACT same problem with mine.

however on my laptop there is no issue.. wuts the dealio? We must be doing something wrong.

ozzsoad,

Did you double check in the VTR menu settings that the camera was set for HDV or auto playback? You might've inadvertently set it to DV standard playback and that might be causing your blank window.

When you open the "capture" window go to "settings" and then make sure you have on "device control" the option "dv/hdv device control" selected. The go to the "options" option (right below "device control") and make sure all your settings are right (since the XH-A1 doesn't apear on mine I select "canon" and then "standard"). Also make sure that you didn't select on the A1 the option to downconvert to SD on camera. I hope it helps.

I'm not sure if you'll have to restart or start another project (premiere pro 2 has some very stupid things going on). You may also want to go to "project-->project settings-->capture--> and then select HDV capture.

still not working for me...
hmm, no problem capturing live HDV but captured is another story...

still get that offline message.

Alright, I double checked that the camera was set for HDV. I did everything that rawfa suggested, and still the same thing.

It really is frustrating not being able to edit the HDV footage I have. I'd hate to have to settle for DV knowing how incredible this camera is. I'm downloading the Trial version of Sony Vegas right now though, I'll see how that turns out.

Okay, I played around with Vegas for a few minutes and was actually able to capture footage. It was the first time for me to see what it actually looked like and I'm blown away by the quality that this camera produces. But still, why can't I get it to work with Premiere? I tried importing the .M2T files but it said "File Format Not Supported." I thought you were able to import the raw footage. What's going on here?

It is settings in camera. I couldnt fix it while the fire wire was plugged in.

im just sitting in class now, ill post how i did it later on k?

Ok I had this problem:

Make sure the cam is unplugged from your computer....

Put the cam in VCR mode

Menu=>Signal Setup=>Playback STD=>HDV

Plug her in and try it.

Should work fine now.

Okay, I'm pretty worried now, this just doesn't seem to be working. When PaPa said he fixed it with the firewire unplugged, that's the first thing I did. Still, it says Capture Device Offline. I set Playback STD to HDV, but nothing has changed...

ozzsoad, I suspect that either Vegas writes M2T files differently or your installation of PPro is not quite right. I can import M2T files created by DV Rack doing a live capture from my A1; even 24F. I'm currently using just straight HDV support in PPro 2.0, not cineform or other plugins. I've also used the PPro 2.0 capture facility although not as extensively.

This just doesn't make any sense. I can capture with other programs including Windows Movie Maker for crying out loud. The problem obviously lies within Premiere, I just can't figure it out.

when you go into your capture window in pp2.0, are you in capture format : HDV capture ?

Yeah, I've checked and double checked everytime I've opened up the capture window, still no luck. I don't know, maybe I'll re-install Premiere when I get back home.

Until then, anyone have any suggestions for different editing software? I've been a longtime Premiere user but this is just way too frustrating for me.

I think I may have figured out why I can't capture from my camera onto Premiere, because I just have the Trial version. I've been checking out other forums, some saying that the trial version of PP2.0 doesn't support MPEG, which explains why I couldn't import .m2t files. So, this means I have to buy the full version before knowing for sure if it works. I don't know.

PaPa, are you using the full version of PP2.0?
