Are you the same Richard Hunter on dvinfo.net?  If so then I am surprised that you have not seen these posts ...

Yes I'm the same one. I only started reading that forum a few weeks ago, so I didn't see those comments. I wish they would post these prominently on the Watchdog pages, together with a "Buyer Beware" sign.

Thanks for the link.

Not a problem. I have been reading that forum since the XL2 was announced. I agree their should have been a bit more of an open discussion regarding the Lens issue. I was under the impression that the mods @ dvinfo.net were a bit quick to dismiss these types of discussions. I am not trying to start any trouble but I was hoping for just a little bit more of an honest discussion regarding this and past XL1s Lens problems. Don't get me wrong, I think the XL2 is a great camera, and I think that C. Hurd et al run a pretty good board. Personally, I am just a little worried regarding some operational issues around the camera and realize there is a chance I could end up spending more money on the XL2 than I bargained for.

This is one of the reasons why I did not buy the XL2. It has been a difficult decision for me because I really like some of the footage I have seen.

I'm very happy with the XL2 that I have. It's a lot more work sometimes to get the shot, compared with my VX2000, but the results can be very nice. My main wish for improvement is regarding the 20X lens which isn't wide enough (I knew about this before I bought the camera) so I was hoping that the 0.7X converter would help me out. Unfortunately, this back focus concern complicates things a bit, and I don't want to throw money away if the combination is not compatible.

Think it's time to follow up with my local dealer again....

take a look at these. they are not exactly framed the same but I don't think you need to be to see there is something wrong using the .7x. And just to clarify I can reproduce this on 2 different .7x adapters so it is highly unlikely that it is defective. I moved forward when using the wide adapters to try to keep the angle the same from shot to shot. this will explain why the shots aren't significantly wider on the WA adapter shots. I was closer.

I always heard that the .7x was sharper. This doesn't jive with that theory.

My dealer finally agreed to bring in a Century 0.7X converter for me on a try-before-buy basis, so I was able to test it out on my cam today. They let me use a Sony 14" monitor to check the sharpness so that I would notice if there was any focus drift.

Using open iris to minimise DOF and make focussing problems more obvious, I did not see anything like the results that icicle22 posted. In my tests, the image just stayed sharp throughout the zoom range. The converter also didn't seem to affect the autofocus operation.

I suppose it's good news if icicle's case seems to be isolated. Of course, not so good for icicle, but at least if he can get the lens adjusted, the problem should be fixed.
