"Probable incomplete or corrupt clips"

I just got a HVX205A (Japanese HVX) and use Final Cut Pro 5.0.4. This is my first experience with importing clips from it. Awesome.

Wouldn't surprise me if I captured them funny, but they play just fine on HVX itself, but when I try to import any of them, individually or as a group of clips, that's the message I get.

Ugh. Working with P2 is so incredibly stupid. Why it can't function like any other external memory and simply drop files rather than needing to be importing via a program, which can freak out for any number of reasons, is silly. I planned to use the HVX on the field and, if need be, dump everything onto the computer when needed. Seems it's gonna be more of a process than that. But first, gotta figure out this issue.

No, there's something else in your workflow that is incredibly stupid...

Why it can't function like any other external memory and simply drop files rather than needing to be importing via a program, which can freak out for any number of reasons, is silly.
And there you have it. It is FCP that is the problem. P2 is just files and works on EVERY OTHER EDITOR IN EXISTENCE exactly as you described.

FCP refuses to work with any file that isn't an MOV now. So your problem is with how FCP chooses to work with tapeless footage, not with P2.

I can use Avid, EDIUS, Premiere, SpeedEdit, pretty much any editor on the planet, and drag the files directly from the card to the timeline. That's how it's designed to work. That's the whole POINT of tapeless.

But FCP refuses to work that way.

I don't care what editor you use, use whatever you want and be happy. Just point the blame where it belongs, is all.

And, if you want it to work that way in FCP, you can get it, you just need a third-party tool (which, by the way, will solve all the other incompatibilities and random gotchas that "log & transfer" creates, too.) Use either Calibrated Software's MXF Importer, or DVFilm.com's Raylight software, and you will never have to import again, it'll just automatically work.

Is there I way to do it it that isn't going to cost me MORE money? I just bought this camera, and I'm immediately regretting it. MXF Importer is $90 I believe, Raylight is $150, all because FCP is inept.

Well, if you install P2CMS it will install an MXF importer as well, and that's free, but it's not really a good solution because it brings in the audio separately from the video, and that may be more hassle than it's worth. But you can try it...

Once you've installed it, it installs an MXF import module. You should be able to open your MXF files in the Quicktime player now, or drag them to the FCP timeline (but, again, if you want audio you'll have to go import those separately).

I always appreciate your advice, Barry. I can't seem to open the files, they don't want to play. They also all appear to be "locked" (little lock icon next to them).

Is your Mac an Intel or PowerPC computer?

Have copied the entire p2 volume intact to your hard drive?

Did you right protect the card before mounting it on the desktop?

And are you using the import p2 volume command in FCP?

I worked with 5.0.4 and p2 cards in FCP for two years without any issues.

So did a great many other people.

So let's start with a detail of your set up.

Intel.
I haven't copied the P2 over yet, I'll try that next.
I didn't write protect it.
The Import>Panasonic P2 option doesn't show when I use the blue "connect" screen and a firewire. I got it to last night, which is when it gave this error, but haven't today.

All the files on the P2 are locked, it appears, a little lock icon in the corner of each file.

Oh, and almost every time I try to connect the HVX to the computer via firewire, the computer locks up until I disconnect the firewire from the camera or computer. Sometimes it's when I try to look at the files on the P2, other times it's in Final Cut. Once, I tried to restart, and it didn't reboot for about 20 minutes, at which point I unplugged the firewire and it started rebooting.

I've asked at CreativeCow, but they're incredibly condescending and don't listen to the actual issue. I've since reformatted the harddrive, and reinstalled OSX. When trying to reinstall the newest FCP, the one I updated to to work with the HVX, the harddrive crashed. I'm getting a new one installed.

I also have FCP 5. All I ever need to do is import the whole entire CONTENT folder with Last Clip text file to FCP as I would do in Premiere CS4. FCP will tell me that some of the files are incompatible, that's ok as long as I have the video and audio clips, which come onto the timeline separate as Barry said and I would have to sync them on the timeline, but it works.

Though not sure what firewire OS issue you are having though.
