Ok, project due tomorrow in class at 8. Need to print to video on a mini dv. Can this be done on my DVX 100B? If so how because I tried it and it didn't work.
Thanks
And yes it can be done. You need the camera in "VCR" mode. If the editing software won't start the camera recording automatically, you'll need to do it manually using the controls on the camera.
I had it in vcr, and i said it was recording. The camera even ran the tape for a min. (the duration of the project) but when i rewound it and played it back it was just the blue screen. I am using fcp
Ok, not a recording issue (like head clog then), if the camera had a blue screen, then it's not getting the signal.
I'm going to assume that FCP started and stopped the camera automatically. If that's the case, then the firewire data-connection is working.
So then it's almost certainly an issue with FCP's video output. Could even be as simple as disconnecting and re-connecting the camera to the computer. Or perhaps re-starting FCP. Sometimes even switching timelines can help.
Printing to tape may very well have been part of the exercise. In a day where iMovie can't even print to tape, it's something that needs to be taught how to do properly as part of an inclusive process. Tape is still very much part of the professional world, and the associated workflows have heavily influenced file based workflows, and as such are still an important skill to have.
As a broadcaster who deals with incoming tapes every day, it's amazing how many people don't know how to properly print to tape, bot only just getting the material on there, but bars & tone (at a correct level!), propper slating, countdown, right amount of black, etc..
Not that this was all necessarily part of the motivation for this particular exercise, however it's something that is often taught.
Also, tapes are somewhat simpler to manage as physical media.
Especially if further use of the video is needed - as part of a student news show for example, or even just played back to the class - having a simple common format can be necessary.
Haha. I liked it. I thought some of the stop motion could have done with a couple more frames. But the soundtrack really played nicely. Made the bookstore feel a little magical.
Good call with the frame comment. Next project I do with stop motion will include more frames. One thing is we didn't really plan ahead how many fps we wanted and also not every section uses the same amount. It is a difficult task, stop motion, but a good learning experience.
