Primes vs Zooms

There's no visual difference between the two that I can account for without high-end charts. I highly doubt there's a quality shift, either.

The major difference is simply the ZE... well... FITS the camera. Haha. I don't worry about anything, just slap it onto the camera body and shoot.

There's something I'm curious, about, though. I noticed (and it may have just been in the circumstance) that invoking 1/3 Increment stops (1.6, 2.4/5) electronically seemed to introduce some banding into the image??? I don't know how that's possible since it's a mechanical thing...

But, I jumped back and forth while shooting with the ZE 50 and 85 and saw the same thing repeatedly. Now, honestly, it could have simply been a shift in exposure was just the right amount to introducing banding or blocking... I'll have to check it again.

Regardless, the ZE and ZFs are pretty much identical. It's going to come down to operation and how comfortable you are with either using cheaper Ebay adapters OR paying a heap for really good ones.

This is becoming the Zeiss thread :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
Maybe I made a mistake and should have gotten ZE's but I didn't know about them this summer. I notice that the focus goes in the "right" direction in the pictures of ZE lenses. Can you confirm that?
Is the focus throw and feel on your 85mm ZE as good as the 85mm ZF?
I guess I can always pick them up next year, what with the Scarlet/Epic having the Canon EF electronic mounts, it's almost worth losing the aperture ring for a proper focus direction and not having to use a reversing gear.

You know what? on the focus thing, I didn't even notice. I'll check when I get back to my gear. If it focuses the "proper" way, that'll be crazy. But it makes sense: Nikon lenses are the ones that usually focus in the wrong direction. A Set of ZF's being specifically for Nikon users would probably adhere to this.

And Canon's, if I recall, focus in the proper direction. In fact, doesn't every other lens but Nikon/Nikkor glass? Anyway, I'll check when I get home.

The focus throw on both's pretty much the same, I do feel like the ZE's a bit more "Solid" but that's probably, again, because it's a direct mount and no adapter. Haha.

I think it's worth losing the aperture ring, honestly. I would have never said that prior to using them, but not having to deal with adapters and if they focus in the proper direction, it's probably the better way to go.

It's not like you can't use splits through the camera's control, furthermore, the iris ring's so small I don't know how anyone can hope to get a smooth transition from one stop to another during shooting. You'd be better off with a Fader ND. Well, that's what I THINK anyway. Real world usage may vary.
