Pricing F5 F55

I think 73 steps per stop might be enough but it depends on the extent of the grade. No, most grades probably don't need 16-bits but the other point I was making about linear is that it contains more tonal information in the highlights without sacrificing the shadows.

If they would just start shipping the cameras so I can get off these boards...

Using that logic why would you then spend $35k on the F55 when you can add a 4k recorder to your RED for ~$4k?

ummm because theres no 4K output on a RED system, its only RAW that can do 4K, the HDSDI output is 1080p and so is the HDMI, so thats not possible, and never will be with current hardware. There for spending the $30K + for the F55 would be justified because you'd actually gain something, a way to shoot 4K without raw processing and global shutter.

To me honestly I dont see why anyone would jump from the F3 to the F5 if they want 4K... the cheapest and best option is then buying a scarlet/epic for a cheaper price:

The F5 gives you internal 2K at some point in time in the future... who knows when, it gives you 1080p now. Then you must spend $4K just to get 4K raw recorder (NOT including media)
So you're spending no less than $25K JUST to get the body and raw recorder to shoot 4K raw footage (still no possible way to do internal, so you're limited to raw only for 4k)

Why spend $25,000 on a camera that will give you the same thing a RED scarlet will for $10,000?? I just dont see the point. Unless you REALLY are a Sony fanboy... I dont see a real reason for the F3 to F5 path unless you just want the ergonomics. You're still spending a lot of money to keep the same resolution your F3 has then... And spending even more money to get 4K raw only... Eventhough that exact same package can be gotten for around $10K in a scarlet brand new...

I see the F55 as a camera system that is complete, I see the F5 as something for people to buy if they DONT already own an F3. I just cant see spending that amount of money for new ergonomics and a few extra pixels... F3 with S-log is already proven to be pretty much all you're going to need to accomplish 90% of 1080p work... You've already got 444 options, 10bit... The logic is sound, I just dont see why someone wants to spend so much more money on a camera that doesnt do much else from the F3... Does that external recorder really bother that much to spend an extra $10,000 over the worth price of a used F3 so its built in codec is higher?? seems like a waste of money for someone who already owns an F3 is what I'm saying.

Right, I forgot... you need the $13,000 Meizler module for that

I debated running both F3 and Scarlet-X but in the end you end up having double the amount of proprietary stuff, some of it can work together but most of it can't. I'll end up favouring one anyway, and still need a way to shoot quick HD stuff.

You do your math how you want but if your F3 is paid for and worth $10k on the market then for the diffrence of $10-$15k you can get a F5 with better internal HD codec than the F3 was, 2k XAVC, SR Master, and 4k RAW with AXS. For a difference of $25k you can get the F55 which is still a consideration.

I agree the feature set of the F5 won't be enough for F3 owners to upgrade if they primarily shoot 1080p, but it significantly outguns Scarlet. The feature upgrade is planned to be released before the end of June. So, by then it will have 4K, 2K and 1080 in a variety of codecs with high frame rates that don't window the sensor. The accessories look to be really well thought out. And you can stick the damn camera on your shoulder. BTW Scarlet can't record anything internally. You need a side module for that. I ain't no fanboy either.

Same here... no prices yet... only what is listed.. but I can put down deposits... and it seems others had the same idea as me... get a receipt so I could use it for tax reasons (USA).... but they can't give you a true receipt because it wasn't delivered...

I've seen loads of F3's appearing on the classifieds, and all around this price, and none shifting. I bought my F3 just over a year ago for full price, then spent 3 grand on the S-log update - so to see F3's being sold for around £5k is saddening. It's a fantastic camera and I think there is loads of life in the old baby yet.

It's possible this is a temporary dip. The logic being - with many current F3 owners transitioning to the F5/F55 and trying to sell their F3 as part of the process, there is an unusual amount of supply, and not enough immediate demand. These are motivated sellers who need/want the cash in the next month or two.

So with that F3 you had to either pick up and pay cash or pay by bank transfer. And a seller with less than ten transactions. No wonder it sold so low.

Incase anyone missed this in the specs thread... wow. 500 ISO on the F55 :undecided

Depends on how you shoot. I can't see myself EVER shooting non-SLOG on the F3, the highlight rolloff and added DR just MAKE that image as far as I'm concerned. So for anyone else who's focussed on solely shooting SLOG footage with the new cameras, you'll still get a native ISO of 1250 - that's a lot of sensitivity for a low-noise image, and it's a good 1/2 stop more sensitivity than you get with the F3 (which already allows you to see in the dark).

It's still enough ISO to let you fully shoot in available light if you wanted to, and with the F5 expect an influx of material shot under moonlight, taking things for granted much?

What's interesting is the introduction of 2 new hyper gammas that will boost the ISO by one stop before having to shoot in SLOG. So at least with those gammas you can get 1600 on the F5 and 1000 on the F55. Not everyone wants to shoot SLOG all the time.

So what ISO can one expect when shooting Raw?
