Pricing F5 F55

I think it's too much in today's climate for owner/operators unless you are shooting like a mad thing every day. Maybe it's better to hang on to your F3 for most work, then just hire the F55 if required. Or do what we do and use our FS700 as a 240fps B-Camera. If you already have a camera like the F3 and want to trade-up, $45,000 to $50,000 will cover an awful lot of F55 rentals over a two year period.

Honestly.. the one price Im genuinely shocked by is the 3.5" LCD viewfinder at $3800. Really..?

At the same time you have companies like SmallHD coming out with 7.7" OLED monitors for $2000.

That's what everyone gets for complaining about a very handy flip-out LCD screen and wanting a "proper" EVF - now they've got it.

Classic. Price the f5 more than the epic. Ha.
I'll be passing thank you very much. Too bad.

Actually they would be the same cost not including power or media:

RED EPIC Brain $19k, Side SSD $1500, LCD Touch $1600, PL lens mount $2000 = $24k

Street price for: F5, AXS Raw Recorder, and EVF will be around $24k.

(Not to mention the LIGHTS you will need to buy/rent if shooting RED)

If CVP's prices are the street price for the UK, we could maybe be looking at the F55 at 30K and F5 at $16,500. We'll see..

Ah... you scooped me! I didn't see the pricing until posted here. Sony was supposed to send that press release to me hours ago so I could get a story filed. Drats. Scooped again.

Street price for F5+VF+Recorder+Media will probably be closer to $28K. That makes it a significantly greater value than the C500. For another $3K or so over the C500, better ergonomics and a lot more features. F55 is just where it should be-- a little more than half the price of the F65 yet with the same color range. I think it represents and excellent value.

The obvious question is which product is right for you. Red and Sony are two very different animals and I have no intention of getting into the Sony vs Red religious warfare. F5 and Epic are very close in price. As Dennis says, $19K is just the brain. Like the house I once built. "Oh, you wanted a roof on that house? It will cost you..."

I want the F55. I do not have the business to sustain it. But these cameras to my way of thinking represent good value. I think the pricing has to be assessed relative to the other products on the market. F55 is less than F65 or Alexa by a big factor.

The real challenge is to see how the NewF is adopted by real producers and DP's in the real world.

That sounds right to me. We'll see in the next day or say with Abel and B&H post street prices. I would also figure Recorder+1 card+reader at a street price around $7500-8000.

In the end chose the camera that fits yours needs and budget. Let's all just agree it's been an interesting past 6 weeks:

October 14th RED announces the "scarlet deal of a lifetime" - $7100 for a limited time and undisclosed quantity scarlet kit consisting of brain, side ssd and Canon AL mount.

October 15th marketing manager Peter Crithary for Super 35mm acquisition and technologies at Sony Electronics, USA first tweeted “Ahead of schedule. October 30, 2012. The New F”.

October 26th 2012 @ 10:39pm Jim Jannard posted a thread: “Everything Changes… Important Post” announcing price drops on the RED EPIC to be announced on November 1st, 2012.

November 1st 2012 RED drops EPIC from $34,900 to $19,000 and Scarlet from $11,900 to $9,750.

November 28th Sony releases official USA pricing on the new F's.

I don't see the fuss - just buy/use the off-brand monitors/EVFs you already have. They'll work just fine.

Check the UK street prices on the accessories including the EVFs. They are a LOT less expensive. I think we can expect this to translate down to the US street pricing. Remember the F3 launch and initial pricing. It was way out of whack.

Expect 15-20% less for street pricing.

I'd say a better comparison would be that to have similar capabilities, an EPIC-X would need at least a mount, side ssd, a control device, pro io module, and v-mount plate, which puts it about $26k minimum compared to F5 which may be ~$16k street and closer to a working Scarlet with the same features.

Then if you consider that RED's MX sensor is 2 years old and will cost $6k to upgrade, that puts epic around $32k for an equivalent which is more than the F55's likely street price (~$30k?). But at that price, the F55 has a global shutter and dual recording and proxy recording built in...

let's say the street price is 15% less... so an F5, body, evf, 2 batts (could be a bit higher than my guess), 2 SSD's, recorder = 30k or be happy with 4k internal not raw on the F55 (same package no recorder) = 38k and get global shutter and F65 color... oops forgot the card reader so add another 500 bucks or so... and any clues on the shoulder mount mount...
