Prices Going Up

Is it just me, or is anyone else getting the impression that RED's prices are going up once the reservation period ends? It's not surprising.

I think I know why... It's Bono's fault.. Jannard needs to mark things up a bit so a portion of the sales can go to africa, or he'll be the only "Red" branded product that doesn't.

Sheesh!

What is it with RED this year??

I don’t think that the price will go up, since the price was made known to the world at 17.5k originally. If they were going to do that they might have announced it at say 23k, but for a limited time only reservation holders can get it for 17.5k until Oct 31...which is more straight up.

Like I say, price is determined by market - not Jim. He did not have any idea what market would be because there is not a product like this. He wanted to see what kind of response he would get at 17.5. Now he knows. He will sell the camera for what it will sell for like any other businessman in the world. If I were you I would reserve.

This is a great opportunity for independent filmmakers. Take advantage if you can.

The other important fact is that when you have a reservation list you know how much it costs to make the cameras for those people. After that how many will they make a run of, a couple of hundred? The fact is that no one knows how the market will look after the first lot have gone out. Will there suddenly be a massive demand for the product when others can see the possible results and benefits or will those who intended on buying one already own one through the reservations. If the runs become smaller then the price will possibly will go up. At the end of the day it's just supply and demand and with the reservations they can see how much the demand is. If that demand diminishes afterwards then yes it would likely cost more to buy one later. At least this is my opinion.

It makes sense. Maybe the bundle will change. Free REDCINE till October 31st? Special prices of the accessories for who is holder of a reservation? Facts or just rumors? I'd bet on the first hole according what the last Jim's posts are saying:

The only fact that we already know: this is a solid enterprise and the best indie cinema camera project that we could adhere.

A typical business method... attract lots and lots of people by announcing a low product price. Then, after everyone is talking about the product and how cheap it is, jack the price up to normal market levels.

Billionaires don't get to be billionaires by having righteous business practices.

What's the most we think the price of the RED ONE body might increase to? Maybe $25K? Still far below what everyone else charges.

I think if you want righteous, you should look in fairy tales. He doesn't have to offer it to anyone at that price (17.5)-- even those with reservation (read the contract). The fact that he will do that even if he finds that he undersold himself, is righeous in my book. It is a business not a charity.

Charging for REDCine would be somewhat rediculous. "Congradulations you have footage... for the low price of $XXX you can use it." It almost has to be a bundle of some variety.

I'm still curious how licenseing is going to work with rentals. Can I use REDCine after I return the camera? My guess is Jim doesn't want to invest several hundred thousand dollars in the development of a dongle and it'll just be a shareware license.

I don't see the point of speculating or of posting a thread with the title "prices going up". Now everyone will read this silly thread just to see if prices are really going up, only to discover no useful information.

Your wrong. There are plenty of nonrightous business people out there. They aint billionaires ;) Some are.

Being a business billionaire comes from adding value to a market, innovatiing that value, and keeping ownership of it to remain #1. (Im sure patent applications have been filed etc.. maybe thats shrude, but not unethical)

If RED wanted to raise prices after the initial launch, its not unethical.. Its well within their ethical rights so long as its not exploitative (60k or soemthing). You have to remember that you cant price your product so high that competitors would undercut you. And after red is launched, believe me.. the competition are going to wake up and smell the coffee.

Ouch.. That's a good point Adami.. I should not have titled it that..
Jarred if you can edit it to say "question on price" that's cool with me

I made a bad call on that one.. Sorry guys

The $17K price is a big part of why this camera has generated all the buzz. If the price does go up conspicuously, It would have a serious negative impact on the credibility of the initial statements and on the red team itself. There are many other ways to reward the early buyers who bought in with their deposits. (ie. free EVF? discounts on lenses etc.)

I'd hope that the price stays where it is so the red camera can do its job and change the world.

Cheers,
Pete

There is no question that there is an advantage to those that believed early. After the reservations are closed, we will decide what to do next depending on a lot of things... remember, we are in development. If we raise the prices too high, customers can always decide to not buy. That is not in anyone's best interests. But make no mistake, the reservation holders will have an advantage.

You're making me wish I had the money to buy two... (Actually I don't have the money for my first one yet).

Let's not forget that the Video Toaster (another great example of an industry breaking product) was sold for $1295 (including LightWave 1.0) when it first came out, but was raised to $2495 within a few months. Luckly I preordered that as well.

Anyone else see the likelyhood of being faced with the decsion of keeping your Red or selling it immediately for a very tidy profit? Frankly I would feel really, really dirty doing that, but if the money was good enough, I might just cave. (Hope not.)

The red reservation thing reminds of buying a Ferrari. The Ferrari market is practically built upon second hand sales. Since the only way to buy a brand new ferrari is through reservation from factory through dealership (2 year wait), the only way to get your hands on one instantly is through a consignment or second hand sale. These often cost tons more than brand new. And you often find people reserving spots on Ferrari's production line and selling them for a tidy profit. All those ferrari's you see in the ferrari dealership showrooms belong to private sellers!

Sounds like you better have your money ready the day your numbers called. Cause it could go up or it could remain the same. A lot will be determine by how many people will really go through with it and buy the camera.

I think that someone said on average its only 25% of those who put a camera on hold really go through with it. So if all 700 or whatever the number is purchase and the camera performs I can see it going up.

The problem with increasing prices is that there are some people out there who try to get the money ready right now but will have everything fixed only after the preorder-period.
So if the setup they´d like to buy goes up between 5-10K they´re facing a big problem, I think generally it´s best to say it right in the beginning.
1. that way all the reservation holders will know that they have a great benefit over "later-buyers" and more of them ( not just 25 % ) will try their best to have their money ready
2. more people will preorder it

If you, who work with the RED camera, decide to set a price much higher then now, it's not good to have the official price put up on the website.
The price has spread and everybody who talks about this camera talks about the price. It's the best thing with this camera and getting rid of the best things is not a good thing to do if you want to sell your product. Remember that if you go to high, people will choose cameras like HVX200 with a 35 lens instead, because most people will probably choose 1080p anyway.

If you want to be revolutionary, keep the price. But having it posted as a fact will just screw the customers if it change too much...

He didn't say prices were going up, he said reservation holders will have an advantage. That could be in many other ways.
