Price dropping on A7s?

A week ago, a local dealer offered the A7S (body only) to me at $2200 off the bat. I think the padded cost is some where in the $1700 region.

I would assume that a 12MP sensor would be cheaper to manufacture than a 24MP sensor given the same sensor size.

It's more that the sensor is uncommon (comparatively) and not on big production runs like the other large sensors that Sony manufactures. Also they can charge more because it is targeted specifically to the film crowd (compared to the other nex cameras).

CP+ show is next month (February 12-15) and Sony is expected to unveil some new cameras. Prices on last year's A7R & A7S are likely to drop very soon.

Hm... that would make sense except that in case new cameras unveiled will be other models (A7rii for instance) and nothing new for the A7s yet, then Sony could keep A7s price where it is 'till A7sii launch will get closer (and that could happen mid-2015 perhaps?).

That is true. We don't really know which, if any, cameras Sony will unveil at CP+. The current rumors are the A7Rii (and/or an "A9" pro cam) and an A6000 successor. But nothing has been confirmed by Sony.

I think the A7s is still fairly new. I cant see a replacement so soon. It's a hot camera.

It is fairly new but I bet if the present a7S owners were presented with an a7S replacement that did recorded UHD internally at 422 10 bit, that most would jump at it without too much reservation and then there is NAB.

Maybe. There can only be so much information written to an SD card though (speed) so we'd see a cap at bitrates similar to the gh4. If that was only update I'd pass, and I think others would too (better signal out over HDMI might be another story). I think we will see an announcement this year, with a 2016 release.

I wouldn't mind if they did it using a super efficient codec like H.265, which is how the Samsung NX1 does it. I'm blown away with the detail they manage to capture with fairly standard speed cards, and the whole convert-the-codec for editing won't be a problem forever (its only a matter of time before NLEs let you edit H.265 natively), and it would be nice to know we have an internal option for those that want it in the mean time. There have been a handful of times that I wanted to shoot in 4k, but I'm not going to bring around a shogun in my gearbag just in case the need arises. But to know I have it internally if that should happen, well yessir. Sign me up for that.

Personally? I don't care about 4k yet. And I doubt they are planning on doing that anyway.
If, however, they released an A7sII with in-body stabilization like they did with the A7ii, I'd look long and hard about trading up. Considering they just did that to the A7, I'd say that's a very reasonable thing to expect to happen. Even better would be if they improved the rolling shutter response in FF mode. But that would require a brand new sensor, and I feel like the A7s sensor is too unique to be redesigned already. The A7 sensor was also used in other cameras like the A99, and the A7R's is supposedly the one found in the D800, so I could see them justifying the R&D on a new one at this point. The 7S though? There's nothing like it on the market so I feel like they have no need to jump into redesigns until they've milked this one for all its worth first.

Well I think the 4k is a major upgrade from the 1080p image. But the shogun is too expensive. Then your better off buying a used 1DC, as price difference isnt that much then anymore. Or if there will be released cheaper 4k recorders at Nab then the A7S will become more interesting too me.
