Price dropping on A7s?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who was thinking of picking up an A7s but decided to wait and see if any Black Friday deals come up.
Well, Black Friday and Cyber Monday came and went, and even the debut of a new A7II model, without any noticeable fluctuation in the A7S' roughly $2500 price. I have been especially eyeing B&H as I have some store credit there I'd like to use for this, but it seems to have held its price at Adorama, Amazon, and any other major retailer that I would have bought from. Guess the model has enough of a cult following to keep the price where it is? Or perhaps they feel it is too close to the last price drop over the summer? I dunno.

But anyway, on a whim I did a Google price search today and found it listing the the A7S at $1,899 from Abe's of Maine. In fact, I see 5 or 6 camera stores listing it at around or under $2k.

And they don't seem to be sale prices either when I click on the links- it looks like this is what they are selling the camera for now. My question is- Do you think the big stores like B&H, Adorama, Amazon, etc, about to follow suit with this price drop? Holiday prices and market fluctuations are a bit of a mystery to me!

It has been going for around $2000 on the gray market for at least two months now (look on eBay). Different camera, but today I noticed that the Panasonic GX7 now sells new for for $500. That's a 50% drop since it came to market a year or so ago. Technology is changing so quickly that being a late adopter really pays off.

From what I have seen, Amazon usually seems to be the first to drop their prices. Adorama will often keep their prices the same for as long as possible, but offer a free kit (extra battery, SD cards, lens cloths, etc.) and B&H seems to be the last to bring their prices down.

If you see the camera new for less than $2498, it is a grey market camera, if your getting the right camera... Be very careful. If the camera is the real deal and is grey market it is going to not have any US warranty. As a dealer for Sony products and the A7S I can tell you there is a good reason you don't see the prices dropping from a solid reputable company...

i don't think pricing will change for a while.

... and I've read many bad reviews about Abe's of Maine (as well as all several others A7s 2k sellers).

I have ordered the A7ii, but am still thinking about the A7S instead.

B&H has a trade in deal going now that applies to the S (not the ii). Trade in an old mirrorless camera (or maybe even a lens?) and save 15% plus the value of your trade in. On the A7S, that knocks $375 off the price...plus whatever they give you for the old gear. That's about the best deal I've seen for a US camera from a reputable dealer.

Hopefully Sony will lower the price. The A7s has been out for a few months....that translated into "Sony lifecycle years"....its ancient.

A week ago, a local dealer offered the A7S (body only) to me at $2200 off the bat. I think the padded cost is some where in the $1700 region.

I would assume that a 12MP sensor would be cheaper to manufacture than a 24MP sensor given the same sensor size.

I wouldn't take for granted the rapid life cycle of Sony cameras lately. They are simply trying something different in order to move the needle. There is no way Sony can keep this up. There will come a time when Sony will revert back to a more traditional life cycle.

So enjoy it while you can!

Also be aware that there are stores that list a good price, and then try to sell all kinds of unneeded accessories, and if you refuse, hang up on you. And stores that when you place a web order, will call you to try to upsell you, and if you refuse, suddenly they are out of the item at the price listed. (etc.)

Videopro here in australia are selling the a7s for $1992 (thats about $1620US with a metabones or sony lens adapter) so there's a definite price drop that has happened pretty recently even though stock isn't available til next month.
They've been around for over 20 years and sell local stock so aren't grey market dealers.

Wow, that is really a good deal!
Can I order from US?? :D

The the tax inclusive price. For export purchases if they were possible, the actual price would be more around US$1470.00.

Just got an A7S with free Metabones adaptor (or Sony LA-EA4) and Sony 28-70mm lens in the DigiDirect sale yesterday for AU$1850 inc tax. With the GST claimable as a business, works out at $1665 ex-tax or US$1350. Pretty good price and beats the grey market Asian imports by a long way.

That is an amazing price. Well done. First piece of advice... make sure you purchase cards that are 64 GBs in size so you can record in the XAVC S codec.
