C100: "Press" setting on C100 mk1 does not work

Hello, friends. Super nerdy question here. No matter what I try, I can't get the PRESS setting to have any effect on the picture on my mk1's.

The setting is in the custom picture settings under other functions / setup level / press. As I under stand the manual, PRESS should compress the video signal so it lives between 0 and 100% IRE (no superwhites). And that is indeed how the function works on the mkII. But no matter what I do, I can't get the PRESS setting to have any effect on the mk1's waveform. I've tried several different gammas.

Anyone have any ideas?

Can anyone with a MK1 please let me know if they can get the "press" setting to do anything? I contacted Canon service, but I don't understand the response:

"After you have made adjustments to the Custom Picture Setting (PRESS, Gamma, etc.), save the preset as a Custom Picture File. Leave the menu and press the [CUSTOM PICTURE] button and select Custom Picture File you just saved. Check the LCD again to see whether there are noticeable changes to the waveform."

I don't have the cam (yet), but what it appears to be saying is that simply flipping it on and off in the menus, you may not notice a change. You have to make a custom profile with that setting enabled, and then switch between the custom profile with it enabled, and any other profile, to see the difference.

Yes, that's what I thought they were saying too. I tried everything I could think (loading from a card, changing profiles, etc), but nothing worked. Plus, no other picture settings work that way. As you change them, you see the changes in real time.

dont know, then. its possible that setting only manifests itself visually when shooting under certain conditions (i.e those with blacks or whites dark/bright enough to trigger the compression). have you tried shooting tests in those "extreme" conditions with a profile with press engaged vs another profile, then comparing the footage? maybe even a chart with blacks blacks and white whites. thats all i got.

It's also possible that the setting doesn't do anything you can see on the tiny built in LCD. I'd try connecting it to a large computer monitor and see if you see a difference.
