Hey guys, check out the DVXUser News/Press Releases section. I just posted all the press releases Panasonic sent out for new NAB introductions.

They include a big price drop on P2 cards (64GB card is now $695), a new updated HPG24 that takes the HPG20 concept and adds 3-D sync capability and 24pN recording, and a new USB3 three-slot P2 card reader for super-high-speed card offloads.

This doesn't necessarily mean that this is all Panasonic's NAB offerings, they usually hold something back for day-of-the-show buzz, but it's a nice start!

$11 a GB on P2 - I remember when we were begging for $50 / GB! Wish I had a P2 camera to use with them right about now.

nice. I've been waiting for cheaper P2 storage. I thought E-series was already pretty cheap. Great news for the college students like me.

I would be more excited about these falling P2 card prices if Panasonic had made the AF100 a P2 camera.
I probably would have bought one by now.

I bought two 16 gb cards from dvx users 2 years ago. For the same price I could now get two 64 gb cards ...:-) I never thought prices would drop like this but its all good. I might get a 64 gb card now...

The 8GB card, when introduced in late 2005/early 2006, was $2200. That's $275/gigabyte.

Today's cards are $10.86 per gigabyte. That's a price drop of 96% in the space of five years. Not too shabby. Plus the cards are twice as fast now as they were then, although with the shorter ultimate lifespan.

...although with the shorter ultimate lifespan.

I really wish they'd stuck with the old SLC chips instead of moving to MLC. I know for most people the shorter lifespan isn't an issue, but it would be nice to have the option to buy either rather than being forced down the path of using MLC.

I'm glad I bought my cards when I did (paid $1000 each for two 64gb A series before they were discontinued), as I know I'll never have to worry about them failing due to overuse, regardless of how much or little I record.

They did, for a long time -- but once the cheaper cards came out, the market spoke. I was talking to one seller who said that they were doing 95% of their sales with the MLC "E" series, less than about 5% of customers were opting for "A" series.

My opinion of the E series card is that most users will never "expire" an E Series P2 card. If we're honest, we are only using the card for a full cycle probably twice a week and thus it could take years to get close to that..
They'll (we'll) replace or wear out the camera before they approach the life span of the card. Then the latest and greatest camera will be out and we'll all jump ship to that one..

On the other hand there are the full time production folks that are using their cards day-in day-out and already got their 64GB A series cards and it's a non issue for them on many levels, but it's am investment thats making money and has become a sunk cost.

Final thought? Buy an E Series card and forget-about-it.
Just my thoughts.
