C300: Presets

C300 MKII I haven't shot with this camera yet still learning what I can from it. I'm going out today to do testing on all the presets. Not much info on youtube about clog 3. Anyway long story short what do you guys like shooting with - presets or non presets? It seems that the norm is Clog 2 C,Gamut.

If you want maximum DR from the C300 MKII or the C200, CLog 2 is where you end up. It's flat but not as flat as Slog3.Cine
Personally, I shot a few things with CLog 3, messed with them and thought, "Why mess with less DR? It's not WDR that can be handed off
to a client who doesn't want to mess with Log and it's not as good as Clog 2, so what's the point?"

Also, even though engineering types won't like me saying it, I am liking the Arri LUT over the Canon LUTs for the Canons. The Arri LUT gets me there
quicker and with less fuss and looks a little nicer, at least for most situations.

CLOG 3 is basically the older CLOG with an extended dynamic range. Unless a client is wedded to using a CLOG LUT from the older C300MKI or is trying to match a C300MKI and a C300MKII, there isn't any point in using CLOG over CLOG 3. CLOG 2 is Canon's attempt at matching Arri. Personally, I use CLOG3 because I have become accustomed to working with the old CLOG and how to read the WFM for exposure. CLOG 2 is a bit hard to grade or see without a LUT.

Each of the presets has a color matrix assigned to it, but I don't remember what they are. For my own work, I have tended to stick with Neutral. Production camera is supposed to look like Arri. Cinema EOS original is supposed to look like the old C300 but I don't know if it actually does. From what I have seen, Video matches up with Sony cameras slightly better. At the very least, it tends to actually show blues rather than turning everything purple. EOS standard gives you a high saturation look.

I have to admit that I don't know how the color space actually effects the recording, but it is important to track to make sure that you are using the correct LUT to get the right colors.

picking up the C300 mkii was there a Canon LUT package that went with the camera? I had one person thought I should have received something that I could at least try out on my test footage.

puredrifting: Can you point me into the direction for Arri LUT I would like to that setting.

I'm an okay editor but I am no where close as a okay Color Corrector which I can easily say I suck at it.

The Arri Log C LUT is included and automatically applied on ingest in FCP X with Arri footage and you can manually select it for Canon footage,
so I don't know where you'd get it if you're not an FCP X user but I would imagine possibly here? it might be on the Arri website somewhere but I can't locate it.

Maybe Eric C knows?

I use Arri Lut quite often as well. Looks great.

Matt Porwoll did some fine tests that I found quite useful:

He also gives a link to his custom LUT for CLog 3 in the article.

Also not sure if you're familiar with LutCalc but it's fun to mess around with to generate some LUTs, apply in Resolve (or Assimilate Scratch in my case) and see what happens:

Wishing you good experimenting.
