Presets for Low light Xh A1

Hey guys, the amateur is back again. I hear all these comments about the xh a1 being INCREDIBLE at low light situations, but I can't seem to find a good preset for it. I'm toying with the camera a bit, and I turn off AGC and open my iris all the way, and give a 1/120 shutter speed. I tried toying with my blacks a bit, but I'm not too sure on what i'm doing. I've seen some great sample footage of awesome low light situations. So here are my 2 questions.

A) What presets would one use to achieve a great low light situation?

and

B) I know that you can always adjust in post, but what is advised when brightness is a factor? Would you rather frame your subject with what you want in darkness blacked out, or would you rather frame your shot with the entire picture, and then bring down brightness in post?

Also, when I use low light footage... it looks grainy at best. AGC is off, and I can't seem to get a good image. Thanks guys.

The A1 isn't incredible in low light. It's comparable to other HD cameras, which is not very good at all. Your shutter speed is 1/120 which actually let in less light. Bumping the gain to 3db might not be too noticeable, black Stretch, master pedestal -3 or more. Maybe turn on NR1 or NR2 to low but no more.

I really didn't notice too much of a difference shooting in lower shutter speeds, except that my motion was leaving artifacts. when filming, do you think it's better to put more light on the subject, then bring down the light in post?
