Presentation tming to integrate PowerPoint

We're using an HVX200 and we occasionally we do presentations that involve a PowerPoint. Filming the screen is a no go with me. Usually I just export the PowerPoint to JPEG and insert slides in post. The problem is, I have no idea where the slides should go since the camera is on the presenter. Usually I give the raw footage to the presenter and ask them to indicate time on the slides so I can insert them. This is a real pain and seems to always need a second cut. Getting them to turn it around to me turns what could be a one day project into weeks.

If I could somehow how know what slide is up that would make things much faster and easier. I could keep a log and write down the time code, but I'm also running the camera and monitoring the sound. It would be awesome if I could "mark" the video for each slide. I thought about using the built in mic to tick it every time a slide changes.

Does anyone have any other grand ideas?

Oh, and I'm editing on FCP 6 and recording on P2.
 
One option is to seperatly log onto paper timecodes at slide changes. - The feasability of this of course varies on the type of shooting.


Another option is to zoom out a little to show the screen at key points just after each slide change, and then return to the speaker. These zooms to the screen will then of course be covered by the slides added on top in post.

This adds the benefit that if you can't get the slides for some reason, you have them on tape too.



If you have a spare audio channel - or even just using the internal mic - make yourself audio comments just say "slide 5" onto the track, etc. - if it's otherwise quiet (or you mute the comment mic), it will be easy to find the comment points on the waveform in the timeline.

Or you could experiment with the SHOT MARK and INDEX functions.

When I used to do a lot of corporate gigs like this, I thought of a way that makes it so easy. I would bring an extra little cheap $300.00 DV camera, plop in a tape and get a shot with the slide screen. Load into FCP, line up audio waveforms and use multicam to edit. Then overwrite the JPEGs. So easy, it's almost scary.
