C100: Premiere Pro AVCHD problem

CS6 has a well documented problem with AVCHD files from some cameras (http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/kb/audio-video-glitches-avchd.html).
I have a couple of clips that will not play back in PP. Audio plays but the video only plays for a very short time then freezes. Eventually the program or source monitor goes red. This is not a consistent problem, I have several clips of similar duration (~7 min) that play fine.

Have others struck this with the C100? If so, how did you get around it?
Looks like transcoding may be the only option. What programs/codecs would you reccomend for a Windows system?

Hello to Vienna!

how do you import your footage? via the media browser inside PR or just drag and drop your footage into premiere? do you copy the single *.mts files from the STREAM folder or the whole folder structure including the PRIVATE -folder on top?

Hello Innsbruck!

Generally I use the data import utility that came with the camera as it renames the files to avoid duplicates and joins spanned clips. I have also tried copying the whole folder structure and importing through media browser. Both methods gave the same problem.

is your PR up to date? i know there were a lot of issues in the first two builds, but 6.0.2 should be fine - I'm on mac though... also, what specs does your pc have?

as for transcoding, there for sure are some other folks here who can chime in and answer this question for Windows... i can't :)

Yes, latest version installed. i7 2700k, 32 GB ram, separate drives for everything. Pretty sure it's not a hardware issue as I'm currently editing a four camera multicam with a mix of C100 and dSLR. It's just some longer C100 clips that seem to give problems.

How can I tell?

well you said it only happened to long clips, thats why it brought me attention.

on the bottom right of the program there is a loading bar that appears once a new clip is imported

generally you have to wait till it finishes then you can do the edit.

if this is not your problem then
my suggestion is
check your hard drive, try to copy this video file to another hard drive and import it to PP.sometimes if the hard drive has auto sleep fuction (I dont know whats that called in the real world, but it tends to shut itself down to protect files, and reduces spinings. you can hear its sound when it starts up/shuts down). and this function does cost time, so during the start up, the program freezes, and it may keep freezing even after the hard drive is ready.

this kind of hard drive is usually used in portable hard drives. it is cheaper than same capacity hard drives (Western digital has 3 lines, green blue black ? something, the green is the one that Im talking about, the cheapest)

Bottom line is, C100's file is a lot easier to edit than 5D's cuz its MB/S is half of the size.

and there is a function in C100 (auto-recover), when you release battery during recording, when you plug it back, it asks you to recover the lost clip. I tried twice, it recovered my 40mins clips without any problems.

dont know if this helps but thats all I know.

The conforming time is very short so there could be an issue there.
I'm confident its not the HDD. I've tried putting the media on three different drives.
It seem most likely that it is related to the clip as multicam with a mix of other C100 and 5D is working fine.

I had similar problems, when using a AVCHD 25i timeline, which Premiere unfortunately is creating as "New Timeline from Clip" for C100 files.
Working with a AVCHD 25p timeline solved the problems for me.

Not the problem here I'm afraid.

I'm just bumping this because I'm still having problems with long C100 clips in Premiere pro CS6. Playback is very jerky, takes a long tome to start and sometimes completely locks up even with 1/4 quality. My computer should easily be able to handle the playback. Long 5DII clips are no problem.
Does any have any suggestions?

I have the same problem!
some times some clip will just not work in premiere!
i tried everything! And no success.
avid plays the file perfectly and vlc...
i will die to know why is it heppening.

After battling this for a long time, I think I have worked out a solution! I will report in detail tomorrow after more testing but the ingredients are Cineform codec (free from Gopro) and Adobe Media Encoder.
