Premiere Pro 1.5 or Final Cut

Here's what may be interesting. And please guide my logic, or comment, because like I said, I am not the tech guy. Also I don't know much about Vista.

Mac sort of came to a standstill with the powerPC chip, primarily in it's powerbooks. If you look at the same case, the power pc version will take up the entire insides, and the intel looks practically empty, especially cuz it runs so much cooler and doesn't need 9 fans (I think 1 suffices for intel). At some point I think mac will try to fill the empty space with more and more intel technology.

So far on the Windows OS (pre-vista), intel and chip designers have to make sure their chips will work for the last version/s of Windows, which limits some of their creativity. But from what I've read in articles, Intel could make whatever new massive beast of a chip it wanted, and OSX would accept it and run fine. Does that sound right? Like I said, I don't understand a lot of the principles here, so I'm just blindly regurgitating and may be off-base.

What all is Vista supposed to open up for Windows?

As for Windows VISTA; I have only seen the beta 2 version in testing. so far.... go to microsoft.com or tomshardware.com for more info. Like any thing else; wait for release, then service packs....same old, same old.

As far as I can see, it will be more "Multimedia supporting"> We will see.
Kinda funny, every Windows OS looks more "Mac-Like" to me:)lol!!!!

As for "More stuff in case"? PCs are either Intel or AMD and 64bit, dual core or Hyperthreding these days...Amds run much hotter and need more cooling. But I haven't seen a Power PC Mac or PC with a "Full" case.... Mainboards are pretty simular accross the board. and then there is only memory, video CPU/CPU fan...HDD, etc. That's ALL that would be in any computer case.

from what's circulating online, this is the difference.

course, maybe someone just gutted a g5 in the right one - or maybe it is the intel version as claimed on Wired and other sites with some ethos - i dunno. but either way, the power pc g5 on the left looks to have a lot in the case. that's the main prob with not being able to progress with the powerbook while keeping it slimline. Too hot, not enough room for more power AND cooling. The intel chip should fix that, and deliver a much-desired new powerbook.

I regularily switch between a mac G5 dual and PCs - I would definitely go with FCP any day over premiere. I've only started using FCP the last month but it has been easy to pick up although like any program it has its quarks.
I'd have to say for straight editing I don't exerience much of a difference. FCP does much better slow mo and color correcting in a breeze.
But at the same time I usually move over to After Effects for anything more than basic CC or straight slow mo.

That said I would choose AVID over either. If you're planning on doing editing for a career, or even thinking of it, the time investment is worth it. It has a learning curve but once you're going, you can go fast! After learning avid switching to either of the other should the need arise is cake.

Everyone will have their favorite computer and os, I love the mac os, but let's be honest neither is bullet proof. I crashed a dual G5 the other day by plugging by ipod into it... It happens to both systems so I don't think that should be the deciding factor.

Make your choice based on options, ease of use, and the real kicker between the two - the amount you can afford to spend.

I don't know for sure, but that sounds wrong to me.

"Mactel"s will be running on x86 architecture...same as windows PCs. This is what dictates the general design of the processor.

Now, if Intel was designing a whole new architecture, I would be more excited. I'd also be more excited if Apple had chosen AMD, but that's another story.

Ironically in all of this, x86 is considered by quite a few to be an outdated architecture that could use much improvement. I remember reading that it's leveling out on how much faster it can go... Supposedly with better architecture we could get faster processing with fewer clock cycles.

True, Mactels will run standard Intel p4 cpus...(not a special one)
Inels cpus are increasingly getting updated. Dual core, quad core coming out soon...

so Macstels, PCs and PCs running Mac osx86 will get faster.

Right, but that's not so much processor improvement (clock speeds can't get much higher or so?), so now they are adding more cores to help them get faster. The benefit of this will soon level out as well...as you add more, the gain from each one is less.

Dual cores is more like two processors, than an improvement on a current processor.

Well, some MacTels use P4, but some use Pentium Mobile, which is a very poor choice for encoding video - for some time now, otherwise awesome p-m chips have logged ridiculously slow times on encoding. Intel's been working on the problem, but until you hear otherwise, steer clear of P-M (which means basically all laptops, these days) for encoding files.

Just noticed this. After Effects is a visual effects type program...not really an editing program. Apple's Shake is more comparable than FCP.
